While the tone of the article is (given the source) as usual authoritarian and sycophantic to the police, whinging about their budget despite the shiny new casino hotel HQ, and that they've looted the Firefighters and EMTs to the bone...

It still shows up that the neighborhoods have begun to stand on their own, effectively, and many have pulled in Contract Security as well.

Of course, they also dance around mentioning that the police ARE much of that crime they're fighting back against, and that the failure of the boys in blue to protect the neighborhoods they're in reality preying on is what led to this.

But still, it's nice to see folk aren't taking it laying down - although this is eventually gonna come to a head when the neighborhoods start clashing with the police - hopefully without violence, but I don't hold out a lot of hope for that, sadly...

Problem is, when folk start having to protect themselves, hiring their own defense forces and whatnot, they start asking WHY we *need* those blue suited assholes who do nothing much but abuse, exploit and extort the communities they're supposed to be protecting... and they start questioning why they need to pay for em.

And THAT starts trouble, every time - but so far it's been limited to ugly threats (from the police) and budget cuts (from the communities) and in some cases, disbandment of the departments in question (Pontiac), and I sincerely hope it doesn't come to blows, but I do worry.

Especially as not all of the security elements being hired by these neighborhoods are typical white shirt watchmen types, and you gotta be careful with that sorta thing cause security firms are no more immune to corruption than cops are - just more vulnerable to financial retaliation, since in extremis you can just fire em...

But of more concern is that some of the harder hit neighborhoods have hired outright mercs, lowball PMCs who for one reason or another didn't make the cut to join Blackwater, DynCorp or Triple Canopy (some for moral reasons) and while some of em are decent enough folk, there's still a certain slimy, provocative element to that, and the idea of THOSE dipshits getting into an exchange of lead with the "official" forces of law and order gives me the goddamn willies.
