WAKEUPSOON

Just wondering if anyone else was part of the protest in London on Wednesday. 50,000+ people there - hopefully I wasn't the only Browncoat!

It's such a shame about the minority who rioted though. Literally under 100 people out of 50,000 - and yet that's all the media talked about.

Whoever started that bonfire should be ashamed of themselves.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Welcome Wake, don't think I've met you before. You didn't mention whta the protest was about, and I haven't heard about it.

It's always the case, however, that "if it bleeds, it leads", so any violence, even if just by one or two, will get coverage. It IS a shame.

I've been a member for quite a few years, but I go through phases without internet so gaps between my posts can get quite big!

I thought the banners would help a bit, but basically the protest was held by the National Student Union of Britain against the fact that the government want to triple our university fees. This would make higher education in the UK elitist as only the very rich will be able to afford it (we're talking over £12,000 for the fees alone, not including accommodation or maintenance grants). It's made even worse by the fact that one half of our coalition government promised not to increase fees at all, with their aim being to eliminate tuition fees altogether.

DREAMTROVE

Yes, welcome to the asylum for the bewildered and belligerent known as RWED.

As for education, I concur on the bogosity of top-up fees, etc. but universities are largely obsolete, as they require several large buildings to port them around in, whereas my iPad weighs 24 ounces and contains rather more information.
