Wow! Looks almost like you guys took a page out of OUR book!
Quote:

The UK is one of the unhealthiest nations in Europe for some health indicators, data suggests.

Figures from the Association of Public Health Observatories reveal the UK is the fattest EU member and has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies.

The UK also performs badly on female cancer survival and infant deaths.

But life expectancy figures in the UK are slightly better than for EU counterparts and the nation also excels at treating heart disease.

And our early action on smoking has had a very positive impact on health outcomes, the report authors say.

They compared all regions across 27 countries in Europe using 37 health indicators in 2006.

Hot spot

The UK as a whole scored particularly badly on obesity, being the fattest nation of all.

And within the UK it was the West Midlands that had the highest percentage of obese adults at 29% - nearly double the EU average of 14% and much higher than the 19% rate seen in Greater London.

The UK's female death rates from cancer were also among the worst in Europe.

Deaths in south-east England were the highest at 185 per 100,000, followed by Scotland at 179 per 100,000 and north-east England at 174. This compares with the European average of 139.5 per 100,000.

All parts of the UK had more teenage mothers than in most other European countries - but the North East of England came out the worst.

The researchers acknowledge the picture may have changed slightly since the data was collected, but they say their snapshot should be a warning to public health experts.

I'm appalled by the figures and feel ashamed as a GP working in the West Midlands that this area has the highest percentage of obese adults in Europe”
End Quote
Professor Steve Field

Chairman of the RCGP
Dr Claire Bradford and Professor John Wilkinson, who compiled the report, said the information could help the UK improve its track record.

Dr Bradford said: "This type of data allows us to compare not just between countries but within countries and to look at what is going well and what is not.

"People that are able to influence which way we are going as a nation should look at this to decide on priorities and actions.

"Our problem with obesity might be a good place to start."

Commenting on the data, public health expert, Professor Sir Michael Marmot said the report highlighted "stark differences" in health across the EU.

"The causes of health inequalities are socially determined," he said.

"The behaviours that lead to obesity and teenage pregnancy, for example, arise from social conditions.

"This knowledge informs what we as a society can do at a local, regional, national and international level to create the conditions for greater health equity."

'Appalled'

Professor Steve Field of the Royal College of General Practitioners said: "I'm appalled by the figures and feel ashamed as a GP working in the West Midlands that this area has the highest percentage of obese adults in Europe.

"Obesity is a major problem and predictor of ill health throughout a patient's life, causing serious illnesses.

"I hope we will be able to do more in the future to get people to take responsibility for their own health and take more exercise and eat sensibly."

A Department of Health spokesman said: "The government has made it clear that tackling health inequalities is a priority as part of its commitment to fairness and social justice.

"Action to tackle health inequalities is at the centre of our approach to public health.

"We will aim to use the least intrusive approach necessary to achieve the desired effect.

"We will seek to use approaches that focus on enabling and guiding people's choices wherever possible."

Okay, now watch the screams as the government dares to try to do something about it...

UK eating habits used to be awful, truly awful food cooked badly on the whole. In scotland, I saw deep fried pizza being cooked in a fish and chippery. I think everyone has a heart attack at 30.

Mind you, I think Australians are the next biggest lot of fatties after the Yanks, so I can hardly be too judgemental here.

Gawd Raptor, can you get your mind on NOTHING but that shit? This has nothing to do with it, but your obsession...ach, why bother! Yo are so one-dimensional.

Yeah, Magons, I saw my share of bad English food; some of it just turns my stomach. They say it's because of the cold Northern climate that fat is such a huge part of their diet; which makes sense, but really...!

Jo, on the rare occasion she'd cook, made a "roast" that Jim and I couldn't believe. I swear, at least HALF of it was fat, and she used to complain that all the meat sold in our meat departments was "so damned lean. Eeep...

I blame their anglo saxon heritage, which frankly has been responsible for the world's worst cusines, and something about the rationing in WW2 for which they never seemed to recover and eat normally again. the only saving grace for australian food, which also shared that heritage, was the constant influx of immigrants from places with decent food tastes.

Thank god for the old Raj though. At least you can get a decent curry in the UK

I love a good roast, Niki. Roast beef and yorkshire pudding, roast spuds and gravy. It may not be healthy but it's yummy.

I've never been to the UK, so I'm certainly not qualified to comment on that, but I would hazard a guess that there problems with obesity are very similar to ours. It's hella cheaper to eat unhealthy than to eat healthy, which is probably why we see this trend amongst certain social groups. I'm not sure what the logistics of this would be, but if someone could open a bunch of cheap healthy fast food joints, and people were aware of them, that someone would make a killing and we'd average as a little less fat.

Lol. They're showing that the UK's health is bad compared to other EUROPEAN countries, not America. One interpretation of this article is that the UK, for its obesity rates and other social problems could be described as 'the America of Europe' . Which maybe shouldn't be that surprising, as we share a common heritage, and both have a geography that promotes insularness.

And why do you think Obama is basing his healthcare plan on the British system? I'd guess because ours is one of the more flawed examples (though better than your old one and a fraction of the cost), and consequently the one FOX News chose for its 'fair and balanced' analysis and reporting to America.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Magons, I love a roast, too, being a meatatarian! But that picture was of reeeeeely lean roast, by British standards! Half of that would have been the fat around the edges, if Jo made it.

I never even tried to eat roast beef when in England, because the only kind you could GET was overdone. Mad cow isn't the excuse--they ALWAYS cook their meat to the point where it's virtually inedible, to me.

I dunno about WWII as an excuse, because their "cuisine" (I use the term loosely) has always been similar to what it is--at least the stuff they cooked themselves. Worst food I've ever eaten was in England and Scotland...and how old is Hagus, anyway?

I agree about unhealthier being cheaper and easier than healthy, and we have Mickey D to thank for increasing unhealthy eating the world over (ain't they great?).

And yes, the article was about "EUROPE'S" unhealthiest nations, we're the unhealthiest in the world. The crack about the healtcare bill is stupid and nothing more than a partisan snark stuck in by one of those unable to speak to any issue any other way.

Actually their cuisine wasn't always the same. It's changed quite a bit over the years, and particularly in the first half of the 20th century.

A really funny series on tv explores some of this (I was interested in it any way) called Supersizers Go.... Loosely based on the Supersize Me guy. They go through history and eat for a week what was commonly eaten.

Australians eat their meat very lean as well.

Oh geeze, now why would anyone think THAT ?

But Obama’s pick to run Medicaid and Medicare — Donald Berwick — is a pediatrician and Harvard University professor with a self-professed “love” of the British system.

Berwick has called Britain’s National Health Service “one of the greatest health care institutions in human history” and “a global treasure.”

He once said it sets an “example” for the United States to follow.

And his decadelong efforts to improve the NHS were so well-regarded that Queen Elizabeth granted him an honorary knighthood in 2005.

Nah, you want good english food you gotta get some Fish N Chips - closest you'd get in the states is Arthur Treachers, but they closed all the ones up here and I gotta go to friggin Ohio *bleh!* to get any - that I have made the trip speaks much of them...

Of course, it also depends on who's running that franchise too, cause some places ain't met the standard (which is why they got closed down).

Actually, the British health system is not too bad. Not as good as the Australian one, of coure. At least no one inherents the medical debts of a loved one, or has to decide whether or not to keep the house or get expensive lifesaving treatment for a child.

we have fish and chips too. Not healthy at all, but yummy every now and then. The main fish we eat is shark - we call it flake in the grand ol anglo saxon tradition of calling an animal something different when its cooked on the table.. ie pork, beef etc.

Battered flake, chips and potato cakes. Hmmmmmm

I'm a big fan of Gordon Ramsey. Man knows how to cook and his TV shows are fun to watch.

There's a local place with a brit chef that makes great Shepherd's Pie.

I saw the article saying Britain is unhealthy. I thought it was about the economy or perhaps the Queen's bank account...

That some here have twisted the subject to bitch about the healthcare bill is totally unrelated to the fact that Britain is among the unhealthiest of Europe’s countries, it is just partisan ranting. on a completely different subject. If one wished to compare the health of those in Britain who receive medical treatment to other health-care systems, it might be valid. As it is, it’s not. The subject is about eating habits.

And Medicade and Medicare DON'T have anything to do with the health care bill...that's why so many were protesting "no government health care!" and "Don't touch my Medicare" at the same time. Also irrelevant to the topic.

Frem, my apologies. I forgot fish and chips. In THAT category, their food is unbeatable, I freely grant you!

Oh, gawd, I couldn’t get past the third or fourth photo on that site...I haven’t had breakfast yet and was afraid I WOULDN’T if I kept scrolling! I can’t believe people actually EAT that kind of shit...

Well, we americans got the corn dog, which is pretty damn good in an of itself - not only does the lack of a nearby Arthur Treachers bug me, but one of the only things I miss about Tex-ass is that we don't have any Corn-Dog 7's up here, that being kind of a fast-food shop which served corndogs, up to and including one that seemed to consist of an entire polish sausage and was large enough to be wielded with both hands, yummy!
http://grannymountain.blogspot.com/2009/08/corn-dog-7-revisited.html

And however thought up the idea of modifying the concept to breakfast sausage wrapped in pancake batter (with syrup as a side) is a damn GENIUS, cause those are so seriously awesome.

I make my own, to avoid all those nasty additives like MSG, hydrogenated crap and HFCS, though - at least the copyright police haven't started chasing down people for recipes... YET.

My black-cover recipe book is actually guarded better than my financial ledgers and protected more jealously, as someone pointed out this morning.

Wow...we actually are in total agreement. Corn Dogs are great and the whole sausage/pancake/stick arrangment is an evolutionary leap in breakfast food technology that could only come from a free market capitalist system (likely a surge of creativity brought on by the Bush tax cuts of 2001).

That's kind of how I imagine American food. Take a sausage, wrap in batter, deep fry, drizzle over maple syrup, wrap in bacon, deep fry again, pour over double cheesy sauce, add marshmellows, serve set in jelly for thanksgiving dinner.
