Just hours after 22-year-old gunman Jared Loughner launched a shooting spree at a Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) constituent event in Tucson on Saturday that left six dead and 14 wounded, Legislative District chairman Anthony Miller, a Republican, announced that he would resign his position. In an email to the state’s GOP chair, Miller cited “constant verbal attacks” after his election last year “and Internet blog posts by some local members with Tea Party ties made him worry about his family’s safety.” Many of his Republican colleagues followed him out the door.

The newly-elected Dist. 20 Republican secretary, Sophia Johnson of Ahwatukee, first vice chairman Roger Dickinson of Tempe and Jeff Kolb, the former district spokesman from Ahwatukee, also quit. “This singular focus on ‘getting’ Anthony (Miller) was one of the main reasons I chose to resign,” Kolb said in an e-mail to another party activist. Kolb confirmed the contents of the e-mail to the Republic.

Miller had been on the receiving end of attacks from the GOP’s right-wing activists, particularly because he had worked for Sen. John McCain’s Senate reelection campaign last year against Tea Party favorite J.D. Hayworth:

“I wasn’t going to resign but decided to quit after what happened Saturday,” Miller said. “I love the Republican Party but I don’t want to take a bullet for anyone.”

I can't help it; I contrast Gifford having told her husband she feared for her life, yet staying until yes, she WAS shot, and these guys running for the hills with "I won't take a bullet for anyone".

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I am glad of any politician who removes himself from service this way. I salute this man for telling us all in plain terms why he is not suited for office.

America loves a winner!

This makes absolutely no sense, what so ever.

The shooting had exactly zero to do w/ the TEA Party, or their political position, at all.

But if politicians are under the impression that the people aren't happy, and are too cowardly to run government as it should be run, then maybe they should step down.

Yup Anthony. I can just imagine what some here would have had to say if they were Dems...the silence is deafening.

But, while I sympathize for anyone in their position, I'm hung up between whether they are wrong to take themselves out of the spotlight or not; what I am clear on is that if they want to feel safe, they don't belong in government or politics!
