Saw the map somewhere. Boy was it gerrymandered. If they want to draw a line from the ocean due east to the Nevada line, that might be OK. Draw it thru Sepulveda Pass or Thousand Oaks or Santa Barbara, OK. But to come up the coast to LA county, then swoop inland, then go north into the San Joaquin Valley, sounds like they've picked out the concentration of their fellow travellers, and are interested in maximizing their own political influence, not representing the views of everybody who lives in the area they wish to govern.

Hah! I note the article has a box to check either "politics as usual" or "time to split". The idea is just that common. To my amazement some 88% said "time to split"--then again, maybe I shouldn't be surprised, both N. and S. Cal have wanted to split, well, since I've been alive! But really, it IS politics as usual. Let's see....interesting. So they want to saddle us with Los Angeles and Ventura, eh? Screw THAT! I'm not surprised they didn't want to take Santa Barbara, SLO and Monterey--liberal bastions all. But Mono wouldn't be caught DEAD in So. Ca. and I doubt Inyo would, either. Thank goodness they left off Alpine (which has the smallest population of any CA county); Markleeville is where Jim and I were married and Paula was a ranger for decades. The Sierra Nevada Range runs right along the border between us and Nevada. The thing is, what they've chosen aren't very populated counties for the most part, good politically to get control with fewer votes.

The line I'm used to hearing is in red, theirs in black:

They want the "Big Valley", obviously (from San Joaquin South). Where most of our agriculture comes from; big money. They've also chosen the bastion of the Republican Rich, tho' they'd have to include Ventura and L.A. to really get the population--probably too many liberal Hollywood types for them, or something! I wish we could move San Diego up North with us, the mentality is more similar, but in any split we'd have to let it go...sigh. And we DEFINITELY don't want Thousand Oaks! A dryer, uglier place I can't think of offhand...well, except for Long Beach, maybe (in LA county).

We really do need to be two separate states, Californi is too big to be just one. Texas, too, by the way, tho' until their population really increases, I guess it doesn't matter.

All in all it's pretty silly, despite the fact that I'd LOVE to separate us. We have to work had to out-vote So. Ca.'s Republican base...most of the time we manage it, but it takes diligence.
