I didn't watch, but what I got from the several stories this morning was that Rick Perry is rude, and doesn't think the rules of civilized discourse apply to him.

What do I think? I think it's oddly convenient that the rest of the candidates in the field took themselves out of the debate so that the two mainstream candidates could look like the official (and only) choices.

(EDIT: It turns out I am a moron. Please ignore)

In short, the entire selection (and election) process is rigged and I couldn't care less about the horse and pony show.

(I think that's "dog and pony show", and I agree, only I'd call it more of a circus...or freak show?) Haven't seen the news so can't say, but I think the kerfluffle about when to hold their caucauses is hilarious. "Me first!" "No, ME first", "Well, then I'll beat BOTH of you out and be first!" "No fair!" "Yeah, you can't DO that!"

After a review, both "horse and pony show" and "dog and pony show" are in colloquial use. However, "dog and pony show" is more correct.

My scorecard from the debate:

Romney B+
Cain B
Gingrich B-
Bachmann C+
Santorum C
Perry C-
Paul D

Anderson Cooper gets an A. He did a great job making it interesting and lively for a change.

Whoops.

I heard Jon Huntsman saying something about convincing some of the other candidates to skip that debate, then saw a clip with only Romney and Perry, and then I just assumed.

So... Mostly whole complement, then?

Most of the contenders were in the ring. It was quite fiery and a bit nasty at times, and there were many cringe-worthy moments for me. Cooper, a Liberal, is to be given high praise, as he stood there for 2 hours and had to endure endless Obama bashing. He took it all in stride, and he seemed to play the role of devil's advocate exceptionally well. He must have been on cloud nine being able to manipulate Republicans into attacking each other. All in all, a very entertaining night.

Which only proves Newt's point, all the more.

That's what a debate is for, to see who can deal with tough situations. Newt has turned into a crybaby. What exactly does he think the media does? He's not that naive.

Damn, JS, for the first time you've made me regret not having watched. I've avoided them so far, as debates are geneally only for show and to repeat talking points endlessly, and usually post-debate clips are less time consuming and give a condensed version, but the clips I saw and what the pundits had to say intrigued me...and now your description makes me wish I had taken the time to watch. I'll have to catch it on the internet, I'm sure it's around there somewhere.

And I'm glad Cooper did a good job. What I DID see of a couple of the last ones made me want to smack the "moderators" upside the head!

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Oh but that's not FAIR (whinge, cry).

I find it interesting that the media has nothing to say about Ron Paul. Everyone from the right (FOX News) to the middlish-left (NPR) almost never even mentions him. It's as if he doesn't even exist.

I didn't see the debate, but I gotta ask, JS: Is he really that bad? Or is there some sort of news blackout on him?

He's right about some things, and he's wrong about a lot of things. I like a few of his ideas, but the other ideas are downright nuts and dangerous. That's his problem. Beyond his ultra-loyal core 10% of Republicans, he's seen by the vast majority as living close to the lunatic fringe. But there's no denying that sometimes he's brilliant. But with that brilliance also comes quite a bit of derangement. I think that's why he gets ignored or marginalized in the media.

PRECISELY how I've felt about Paul for a long, long time. I admire him, but he makes me shake my head too much.

I've watched every debate. Frankly I wish there wouldn't be any more, but I think there are at least a dozen more to come. Oy vey! They're getting better because the candidates are becoming more and more desperate to do well and impress, and at this point any of them can go ballistic at any time. From here on out it may turn into a real meatgrinder, unless they somehow agree to be civil to each other. I don't like any of it politically speaking, but it is fascinating to watch nonetheless.

Pretty much my thoughts as well (except without the admiring). Sure, he has a couple things I agree with. But those couple things cannot distract me from all the unsavory parts of him and his proposed policies. And it makes me so confused that people I consider well-informed and intelligent taking a look at this guy and thinking he's a fine candidate (and borderline liberal on top of that) because he wants to legalize pot and end the military action in the Middle East. And that's all they know about him or at least all they care to know about him. To them, he can enact all the terrible policies he want as long as they can smoke pot while watching US soldiers hugging their families on TV after landing back home.

Socialist and unashamed about it.

I used to get the biggest laugh watching George Will, the bow tie conservative on ABC Sunday, say that Liberal's favorite 4 letter word was "FAIR", as in "That's not FAIR!", in his best snarky tone of voice. Glad to head that the Conservatives have adopted that whiny, schoolyard kid objection.

Cuda, everything you said, too. "Admire" IS too strong a term, perhaps "respect" is closer? Much like I USED to respect McCain for telling it like it was (anyone remember those days?). I never took him seriously, probably in PART because of the marijuana thing. We're definitely not ready for that, and there's far too much money to be made by continuing the "war on drugs", so I always thought it would turn off enough people that he could never win.

I'm sad to hear what you wrote about people approving of him because of one or two of his stances...that's sheer stupidity, in my mind! We kind of HAVE to take a few uncomfortable stances from any candidate, but those Paul espouses have always been just too far out for me. Some of them are even things I think would be good...in MODERATION, a word with which he doesn't seem to be very comfortable.

eta: Good one, Nick (prize for first giggle of the morning, easily), and damn, JS, I may have to start WATCHING the bloody things. I don't watch Presidential speeches or debates; that's too much out of my life I'll never get back and I can usually get an idea of what went on from the condensed versions. I didn't watch Bush EVER because it made me want to vomit...that fucking sneer!!!...and I only watched one Obama speech, because it was a pleasure to hear someone who could be articulate. But you've definitely piqued my interest, as have the condensed versious I've caught thus far.
