Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I found this article about our use, production, and export of gas to be interesting.

CANTTAKESKY

I am really angry about this.

This happens in Peru too. They grow all this beautiful produce. But because the prices are better abroad than selling to locals, all this produce grown in certain parts of Peru gets exported. Locals in those parts have to watch their food disappear abroad, and they have to transport food from other parts of Peru for their own consumption. Drives me bananas.

And I believe it happened in Argentina with beef. As I understand it, Argentinans had a time where overseas demand for their beef was so strong, they couldn't afford to eat their own beef. Finally, they put an export cap on beef, just so they can eat.

I don't like export caps. I don't. But I can't think of a more expedient solution to taking care of our own FIRST.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

People have been whinging about US 'energy independence' since the 70's (that I'm aware of). It's supposed to free us from the shackles of the Middle East, bolster the dollar, boost our economy and bring us to the promised land. All except that last part.

But not only does the US export gasoline when domestic prices are at a seasonally-adjusted record high (U.S. drivers paid an average $3.436 for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline, up 1.2 cents from a week earlier and 54.4 cents from a year earlier. The old record for this time of year was $3.111 a gallon, set in 2007. LATimes), but the US exports crude oil, most from Alaska but a chunk expected to be from Texas in 2012.

(Oil Drilling Deception
by Bob Powell, 4/21/11
Summary:

Since 2005 oil exports rose by 483 million barrels while imports fell by 377 million barrels. The result: net petroleum (imports minus exports) coming into the U.S. was 25% less in 2010 than in 2005.

Bottom line: Artificially restricting the supply of oil in the U.S. available for refining yields higher gas prices/profits, and selling U.S. oil on the world market at prices driven higher by speculation does, too. Very clever.)

So why are we going to be doing more deep-water drilling, again? So we can pay the environmental cost and pay more for gas so the oil companies can make even more in profit?

Really, it seems demented.

Ah well, it's all absurd. Crash the world currency, and bring this nonsense to its knees.
