When do the actions of the govt. against the people fall under the definition of war?

The short (cynical) answer? Never, as long as the government keeps redefining "war" and "the people".

At present, "war" is anything we say it is (torture is no longer a war crime if you either don't call it torture or don't admit we're at war), and "the people" are whomever we say they are (no illegals, no non-citizens, and no citizens who say uncomfortable truths need apply, for instance. And we're working hard to make sure minorities and the poor are no longer classified as "people" when it comes to voting, and fetuses ARE considered "people").

Torture isn't torture when it's not... torture. That's pretty easy to understand.

But hey, if you don't like US drones flying over your property, just contact Iran. Seems they have a counter measure that'll take care of that little problem. Praise be unto Allah, of course.

I know you were kidding, but...

Although technically I think Iran might've gotten that tech from Russia or China.

Not seeing how an unarmed drone is that much different from the helicopters that are used for surveillence pretty much every day. In this case, where law enforcement was trying to locate armed suspects, seems safer.

I can think of plenty of reasons why unarmed unmanned surveillance is still not exactly the best precedence ever.

What's next, webcams that can be remotely activated through computer backdoors? (oops)

Don't play dumb. When admitted policy is waterboarding, active practice is cutting off fingers.

You don't know how tempting that offer is.

Like how the last time we did it, it was in Iraq and Afghanistan, under Bush, and in a few years it became "now we just kill everyone, weddings, schools, any cluster of humans has to be assumed to be a terrorist cell?" That's gonna never happen here because in testing the drones, there would have been some sort of incident, like, with a drone bombing a school, in like, New Jersey or somewhere... oh yeah, right.

Ah, the lack of imagination that allows it to continue. I was actually expecting this from further to the left, but you've oblidged nicely.

Skynet just looking, don't worry.
Big brother is watching you, but he won't do anything, go back to bed.

Of course, that was the case we made in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Look what happened with hoverdrones in Dark Angel.

Also from the article:
Quote:

Flying out of earshot and out of sight, a Predator B can watch a target for 20 hours nonstop, far longer than any police helicopter or manned aircraft.
So it isn't just like a helicopter. It is a superspy plane. The difference between cops knocking on your door with a warrant, and cops contracting thieves to sneak in without one.

The technology doesn't matter. East Germany had massive and effective surveillance of its entire population using nothing but people, typewriters, microphones, and filing cabinets.

If you think the government is gonna spy on your every move, it doesn't matter if all they have is tin cans and string. You'll still think they'e spying on you.

Within the limits the drone was being used in this case - called in when armed folks threaten a cop with a warrant - I got no problem. Sure would be handy to find folks lost in the wilderness as well.
