Sure we can... we just have to hitch a ride w/ the Russians, or the Chinese.

But don't worry. Obama has given clear and bold instructions to NASA... make Muslims feel good about themselves !

"One, he wanted me to help reinspire children to want to get into science and math; he wanted me to expand our international relationships; and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering."

So, we got THAT going for us, which is nice.

I'm sure the US can by a ticket from that guy who built that Spaceplane.

And we can always strap you to the nose of one of our big heavy lift rockets. It will get you to space...the rest of up to you.

I note for the record that we could also put women in orbit...but reentry has always been difficult.

That doesn't get you into orbit, though, does it? As I've said before, if private industry does everything better than government, why has no corporation put a man on the Moon? Why has no corporation put a human into orbit more quickly than NASA did?

Probably because until recently, the government was the one throwing megabucks at the companies with the tech to do those things, so no private concern could get into the race. Also, the government was the only entity who could certify manned spacecraft, and they were interested in keeping a monopoly for quite a while.

And yet, even with the deregulation of space, if you will, and even with the availability of the knowledge of HOW to do it (something NASA and the original Mercury Seven astronauts really weren't all that certain of when they tried it) and the background research all done, and billions (if not TRILLIONS) of times more computing power, here we are steadfastly NOT gaining ground in the race for private space exploration.

From the first person into space to the first person to orbit the Earth is a certain benchmark, one that private companies have failed to meet or better. From first orbit to first steps on the Moon is another benchmark; think any corporation will put a man there in the next 7.5 years?

You know the answer as well as I do, Mike. We're not gaining in private space exploration because the government isn't putting money into it, like other countries are providing for their "private" space programs.

And thanks for saying it, Geezer. There ARE some things that governments do better, and there ARE some "welfare" and "bailout" programs that seem worthwhile, aren't there?

Gotta remember, the Russkies were ahead of us then, too. They'd already put several guys in orbit before we launched John Glenn.

Hello,

I think you'll find a lot of people who would choke on their morning cereal at the notion that Outer Space is a worthy Welfare program. You can tell this is the case because our democratic society is not clamoring en masse to throw people into the stars. Rather, they're clamoring for jobs and health care and even wealth distribution in some cases- all in more numbers than space exploration.

Incidentally, this is the same reason private corporations aren't tossing astronauts onto Mars at the moment. The cost-benefit analysis doesn't warrant it, yet. Nobody is paying to go, yet. Corps are going to take baby steps, ensuring profitability at each step of the way along the ladder to the beyond.

When private industry finally does put us into spaceships and colonies, it will make the future look like Aliens, minus the aliens. Not like Star Trek.

My response would be "because we're not who we were fifty years ago". Priorities have changed, and not for the better, as we all know.

And yes, it's pleasant to have people recognize that there are some things government will invest in that private enterprise WOULDN'T...and along with that, all the things private enterprise has GAINED because government put the money into it. Like Tang, way back then, right up to Memory Foam now...

There's also that the notion of people out of range of their jackboots, clubs and guns completely horrifies the powers that be...

Not to mention, yanno, them self-same people of the type who might WANT to be out of that range, sitting on top of their gravity well with a couple of rocks.

We didn't go to the moon so folks could have TANG, Velcro or Memory Foam.

Hello,

Who said we went to the moon so folks could have Tang, Velcro, or Memory Foam?

Niki said that's what industry gained as a byproduct of the effort. And that's the least of what industry gained. Pushing the envelope of what is possible required the development of countless technologies, including the miniaturization of computers.

Not to mention SPACE RAM - which many consider the now deified Momofuku Andos finest moment.

I'd love to hear Rappy's reasons for WHY we went to the Moon. Too bad he won't list them, since I'm not worth him wasting his time.

Y'know how Rappy insists that others argue with him just because of who he is, rather than because of what he's said? This is a prime example of him doing exactly that - he's arguing with something Niki *DIDN'T* say, just because she's Niki.

Well yeah, but it was Ando's INTENTIONS which caused him to be Deified.

He wanted to produce a food product which could be made anywhere, by anyone, regardless of culinary skill or equipment, AND was negligable in price.

I rather think many a college student has worshipped at that altar whether knowingly or not.
