Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

I thought the Vietnam war ended some time ago? Why would one protest it today?

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face
With stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space
To be where I have been

Deverse,

I don't think this quotation is about protesting the Vietnam War. It is about protesting all wars, including current ones.

-----
So many gods, so many creeds,
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
is all the sad world needs.

Yanno, I had this thought this morning, and it may or may not have any real related value....but this whole eat healthy/excercise pr nonsense really bugs me... It's like they are saying "We don't really CARE if you are smart, so long as you make us LOOK good..." ARE they actively TRYING to make a pretty but stupid slave class??

Wouldn't their focus be better served by enhancing education, isn't that where the real power lies ???

Do they really want a nation of idiots? People who aren't smart enough to question? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but it's not like being smarter really would detract from ruling ability , seeing as "smarter" doesn't really equal "more ethical"(at least, from the people I know.)

WISH

Now, why in hell would The Powers That Be (hereinafter referred to as TBTB) WANT to educate "the people"? If YOU were a PTB, what would YOU want? (Especially if your main goal was to STAY in power?) Well, I would imagine that you would want any critical thinking skills to be isolated to your children. Especially the part that questions empathy, since your kids might go off the rez and suddenly start empathizing with the sheep... er, I mean, populace. Then you would need maybe 10% of the population to be well-versed in practical technology like computer sciences, or biotech, or engineering. Forget about blue-sky research like physics or biology or psychology; or deep thinking like physics or philosophy. The rest??? It would be very helpful if they had very short attention-spans, looked on you (or corporations) as their savior, bought whatever trash you chose to push on TV, and spent all of their emotions on their local sports team or yet-another vicious competition like "reality" TV shows. I mean, use YOUR critical-thinking skills, girl!

And OOC, why would you be responding to Kwicko, since his name appears nowhere in this thread?

Sometimes I really don't know... On the surface it LOOKS eengineered, but some people really just aren't made to question or learn things(like where did the phrase villiage idiot come from then??). I don't think gov't would have to do anything to ensure a compliant population. I think a third of the population doesn't try on purpose...

As for asking Kwicko, thought he lived down Texas way...know someone else does, but I couldn't remember who...

WISH... if the Europeans can be a thinking and self-responsible population, and there are few if any genetic differences between us and them... why can't we? Only 10% or less of the population is so deficient in mental capacity that they cannot be taught simple ethics and logic. That doesn't explain our (ie the USA's) outstanding statistics (and I mean "outstanding but not in a good way") on indicators of critical thinking like religiosity, brand loyalty, criminality, and civic engagement. We are an embarrassment compared to the rest of the industrialized world. It's well within our capacity to do better.

WHAT? why did they kill the kid dude I don't understand...

Reminds me of when we read "Johnny got his gun" in High School and no one else in the class got it but me, and I'm not a genius or anything....That's when I knew we as a country were in trouble...

About answers it for me. We are a dumbed-down nation as it is, and the attack on education, as well as the seeming mentality on the right that intelligence is "elitlist" and somehow bad, only reafirms it for me.

Great story, Devears, and scary, but I'm not cynical enough to worry about it...unless the Republicans got enough power...

Do you really think that few would "get it", Wish? If we're ANY reflection of the population, I think a good percentage of people would understand the message. But maybe I'm not cynical enough...yet...

I have in-laws that call me "goody two shoes" because I did Ok in school. I say -That's ok, at least I can spell "goody two shoes" and I can count both of 'em!

As for not getting the book I mentioned, the teacher kept the meaning secret, and had ME explain it to the class.(if you have read it, ignore) At the end of it a man has lost all of his limbs and his senses fighting in a war (for the rich)and it's a bit of a metaphor for losing pieces of your humanity when you let immoral rich bastads run your life. I should mention that I went to an upperclass high school but was not upperclass, so that could have been part of the problem for them. The novel is also bit socialist. "You mean a socialist isn't someone who likes to party??"

Hey Wish!

Physical Fitness is Great!

I was on the "other" spectrum of kids growing up. I went into "new" high-school at only 98lbs. I got picked on a ton, even though I was lean and had a six pack. After a few fights with other "glasses wearing nerds" things changed for me. Once I was an effective part of the Wrestling team and even occasionally filled in Varsity positions my Freshman year, I never got shit again from anybody because there were 10 other guys who would get in the middle of any drama. I'd never felt that comrade-re before.

Once I graduated, I was only 140, but I bulked up to 200lbs of brick shit-house. At 5'7" people moved out of my way at the bar and I was getting offers to "bounce" at titty-bars (but I had a better job then).

Today I'm 180-185 and I'm probably 10-15lbs overweight. It's a HUGE morale killer....

I can still lift shit like a beast, but I can't run to the stop-sign at the corner and back without spitting up cigarette residue....

Education is cool too though...

Most of what your kids learn in school won't help them to "rise" above the "blob" without your help though, even if they had ZERO problems going in.....

I've got some books that might help you with that though.....

(Don't know how your daughter works, but seriously, give it to the boy.... I'm not alone in saying that shitting alone with nothing to read for a guy is hell......)

They're far more interesting a read to me than used video magazine games or the mindless drek that wannabe novelists "post" daily to the boring newspaper.

If you want your kids to really have a good read, have them read Dale Carnagie's How to Win Friends and Influence People: http://www.amazon.com/How-Win-Friends-Influence-People/dp/1439167346/r
ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341326255&sr=8-1&keywords=how+to+win+friends+and+influence+people
(I've got a copy of the original leatherbound cover from 1936 :smokin))

Quotes from the original.....

"Control your temper. Remember, you can measure the size of a person by what makes him or her angry.

Three-fourths of the people you will ever meet are hungering and thirsting for sympathy. Give it to them, and they will love you.

Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.

Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.[/q]

Also, have them read:

http://www.amazon.com/Memory-Makes-Money-Signet-Lorayne/dp/0451162641/
ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1341326336&sr=1-1&keywords=memory+makes+money

Memory Makes Money

=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1341326390&sr=1-4&keywords=harry+lorraine+memory

I cant find any quotes online, but I'm able to (without any math knowldegde), ask somebody to look at a list of 280 numbers and ask them to recite their "reciprocal" to me in any order and I can tell them the EXACT numbers they're looking for.

If you and I were talking face to face right now, you could give me 20 random words and within 30 minutes I'd be able to recite them for you back and forth, left to right.... but not only that... they'd have the W stamp on them and you could ask me the same question 1, 5, 10, or 20 years from now (give or take Altzimers)

How to Develop a Super Power Memory

Word Power Made Easy, by Norman Lewis...

Now thoroughly revised to eliminate outmoded references and to to reflect current idioms, it remains the best and quickest means to a better vocabulary in the English language. EDITED FOR WISH AND HER KIDS:

The versions I worked off of were from my "late" uncle. Much of these were from the early 80s into the mid 80's. And I'm sure you know why. That doesn't mean they weren't worth much, but if you feel these worthy of your kids to read, get the latest versions of them. Live or dead, they have been extrapolated upon, even if they STILL aren't part of the universal curriculum.

Good luck Wish and Co.

Not MADE to? That seems like an utterly foreign concept to me. Are there children who never go through that "Why's the sky blue? Where do babies come from? What do dogs think" phase?

Curiosity is inherent to being human. If some people lack curiosity and drive, I think we need to look closely at why they LOST it.

I have my suspicions.

I don't think gov't would have to do anything to ensure a compliant population.

And that explanation would not be among my suspicions.

Getting closer, but again, we need to ask why. Why are they becoming disenfranchised at so young an age?

I'd say yes and no here. We're actually not that dumbed down, which is why the education issue is so utterly DIRE. But, the thing that none of those wannabe brainwashing tyrants with their anti-critical-thinking foolishness realize, that the more you try to contain the human mind, the more it finds ways to break free. The harder they push, the more people will begin to resist.

They fail to understand this, and that is our biggest advantage.

We're not. :/ That's just the usual spin and propaganda sold to everyone that Oh NO This generation has got it's levels of crazy-stupid out of control! We got to put more security guards in the schools and force them to learn what we want them to learn!

It's a crock.

You want to know why we're not leading in science and math anymore? It's not because we're dumber, it's not because we aren't producing many scientists, because hey, try to be a scientist and find a job in this economy, there's no demand for them because positions are all filled up.

It's because we have no DRIVE. Focusing more on science and math in school might make kids understand it more, but they also might 1) like it even less because of how it's taught, and 2) ultimately, without drive, we're just going to churn out a bunch of mediocre scientists and have mediocre technological advancements. Our society is at it's most stable and controllable when it's stagnant, and the powers that be know that. Look at what happened when we invented the INTERNET for crying out loud. They are freaking out about that.

So sabotaging education under the auspices of improving performance...? Just gonna screw us over more.
