An Open Letter to my 40-something white, male friend on Facebook:

I have not commented in months on your political posts, because I have realized that you are not planning on changing your mind in this election, and you are set on your talking points.

I occasionally post things on my Facebook page for my friends, mostly like-minded politically, many living overseas; to see things they might have missed. Perhaps you would also like to show restraint and not comment on my postings. You will not change my mind either, nor the minds of any of my commenters.

But since you persist, here is my response.

You ascribe to a party that doesn’t believe that contraception should be readily available and covered by health insurance. Period. Yet, if by chance, your daughter becomes pregnant because of lack of access to birth control, the Republican Party believes she must endure an ultrasound of her lady parts to shame her for what she did. Worse yet, if, God forbid she was raped, not only does she have to live with the emotional, and possibly physical, scars of rape, but also with the pregnancy from her rapist. (Unless, of course, you believe that rape “shuts down” the possibility of pregnancy.) It’s also too bad if she has a life threatening hemorrhage while pregnant, that unborn life is worth more to the Republicans than your daughter’s (until it’s born, of course). You believe in the party of “small government”, unless it’s about a woman’s private parts. Then you are for a government as large as a trans-vaginal ultrasound. Extreme.

Explain that to your daughter.

The Republican Party is for the creation of an amendment to the Constitution, that a fetus is a person (just like a corporation). A fetus would have all the rights of a grown person. If your daughter runs a marathon while in the early stages of pregnancy, and again, God forbid, loses the baby, she would be criminally negligent. Even the state of Mississippi rejected this in the last election, but it continues to be a plank of the Republican Party platform. Extreme.

Explain that to your daughter.

I know you’ll claim that you teach your daughter “right from wrong” and that she would never get in the situation of having an unwanted pregnancy. With all due respect, please tell that to the thousands of teenage girls every year that get pregnant, who go to church every Sunday, and who come from respected, involved families. Ignorance and denial aren’t policies.

Explain that to your daughter.

If your daughter happens to be gay, the Republican party believes she should not have the same rights you and I have to marry, have children, or even have the right to visit their partners while dying in a hospital. They have been on the wrong side of EVERY.SINGLE.CIVIL.RIGHTS.ISSUE. Extreme.

Explain that to your daughter.

As a defense, I know you’ll say this election is not about social issues; it’s about the economy. As you are not a woman, it probably isn’t about social issues for you. But, OK, I’ll take the bait.

You believe in a party that believes it’s fair that your daughter and my daughter do not get equal pay for the same job that our sons do. Extreme.

Explain that to your daughter.

You believe in a Republican party that wants to cut federal student loans. Maybe you’ve been saving for years for your daughter’s education. You are lucky to have had the money to do that, and I hope you didn’t lose it all in the stock market crash of 2008 brought on by the fiscal policies of the last administration. If you haven’t been as lucky, and need some assistance, one party feels students should be at the mercy of private lenders with high interest rates. (Or “borrow money from their parents”. – Mitt Romney) Student debt is a huge drain on the economy.

Explain that to your daughter.

You believe in tax cuts for the top income earners and that cutting government spending creates jobs and spurs growth. We are still waiting for that to have happened from the enormous Bush tax cuts. Economists have just admitted this has been a drastic failure in Europe. Austerity doesn’t work in a recession. Why, in the last 50 years, have jobs from Democratic presidents dwarfed those by Republican presidents, 42 million to 24 million? A balance of government spending and fair taxes, not from tax cuts to the 1%. Extreme.

Explain that to your daughter.

Living as a part of a community is not just about “me”, it’s about “us”. Being an American used to be about “us”. We should be about caring for the least of “us”. Charities alone can’t do it, no matter what you argue. We are too large and too diverse for that. We have made promises to our seniors, and those populations depend on those promises. (Please don’t use the 716 billion in Medicare cuts here please, we all know it’s been fact checked to be false). I have and am paying for the current seniors to receive Medicare and Social Security. We owe them that. They paid for the last generation to receive those same benefits. I, too, would like the assurance of knowing that when I’m 65, those benefits will also be there for me. No, I would not like them to be at the mercy of the stock market, and I would not like to have to “shop around” at 75 years old for the insurance company that might take me on, if I happen to have no preexisting conditions. I shudder to think of an 85 year old woman having to sort through the process of finding health coverage.

Explain that to your daughter, your wife, your mom.

You are a white, middle-aged man. You live and have always lived in the middle class. You do not know what it is to be a woman, or any kind of minority. Yet, you and your party want to control and define every part of our lives for those of us who are. This is not Mad Men. This is 2012. You claim women’s issues don’t matter to you.

Explain that to your daughter.

Unemployment is now at a 4 year low. Foreclosures are at a 5-year low. Consumer confidence is at a 5 year high. We are finally out of the black hole. Things are starting to come around. I will not ever vote to go back to the policies that put us there.

I am proud to explain that to my daughter.

Stossel bases his ENTIRE opinion piece on a single book written by Warren Farrell.

And aside from the tidbit that Warren Farrell apparently likes to speak at the Cato Institute I got nothing out of your post except anecdotal blah blah. If they just stayed home and followed their natural intincts to raise a family and keep a clean house there'd be a lot more jobs for men available and less un-employment.

Rappy, I thought you were all about the facts. That's what you've said before, isn't it?

You do realize how scientific studies work, don't you?

If you can cite some peer-reviewed, repeatable studies using scientific methods, and they find that there is no such thing as a wage disparity between men and women in the same job, then you'll have a point.

So far, you haven't. You claim to love "facts", and then produce nothing more than fluff opinion pieces as your "evidence" to support those "facts".

Men are far more likely to work in higher-paying fields and occupations (by choice). According to the White House report, "In 2009, only 7 percent of female professionals were employed in the relatively high paying computer and engineering fields, compared with 38 percent of male professionals." Professional women, on the other hand, are far more prevalent "in the relatively low-paying education and health care occupations."

Men are far more likely to take work in uncomfortable, isolated, and undesirable locations that pay more.Men work longer hours than women do. The average fulltime working man works 6 hours per week or 15 percent longer than the average fulltime working woman.

Men are more likely to take jobs that require work on weekends and evenings and therefore pay more.

Even within the same career category, men are more likely to pursue high-stress and higher-paid areas of specialization. For example, within the medical profession, men gravitate to relatively high-stress and high-paying areas of specialization, like surgery, while women are more likely to pursue relatively lower-paid areas of specialization like pediatrician or dentist.

Despite all of the above, unmarried women who've never had a child actually earn more than unmarried men, according to Nemko and data compiled from the Census Bureau.

Women business owners make less than half of what male business owners make, which, since they have no boss, means it's independent of discrimination. The reason for the disparity, according to a Rochester Institute of Technology study, is that money is the primary motivator for 76% of men versus only 29% of women. Women place a higher premium on shorter work weeks, proximity to home, fulfillment, autonomy, and safety, according to Nemko.

It's hard to argue with Nemko's position which, simply put, is this: When women make the same career choices as men, they earn the same amount as men. As far as I'm concerned, this is one myth that has been officially and completely busted. Maybe you should celebrate International Women's Day 2011 by empowering women with the truth instead of treating them like victims ... which they're not.

And that's as much time and energy as I'll put into that, those facts will mean nothing to Rap.

Unlike him, however, I checked HIS material, references and cites. One is a YouTube of Milton Freedman, not a study with fact and figures. Given he starts out saying (with a big grin) that equal pay for equal work laws are "a source of apartheid", it was tough to keep going. What he went on with was that taking "lower-paying jobs" was how people worked their way up the ladder. That in no way addresses the fact that people who have already had the training and experience are STILL shown to have a gender gap, so I dismiss that.

As to Freidman's possible biases, Paul Krugman (Nobel laureate, whatever else you may think of him) put it clearly by stating that "[Krugman] slipped all too easily into claiming both that markets always work and that only markets work. It's extremely hard to find cases in which Friedman acknowledged the possibility that markets could go wrong, or that government intervention could serve a useful purpose." I think that sums up my problems with Freidman's opinions--which is what they ARE.

As for his arguments, what he quoted states specifically that the wage gap statistic " merely reflects the median earnings of all men and women classified as full-time workers", so that isn't an argument, merely a median, and proves nothing. Given that obviously whoever works more hours gets more pay isn't an argument, it's logic, so it REFUTES nothing, as well. Essentially his quoted material says nothing specific.

As to the other link put up by the Troll, it is also an opinion piece by a Steve Tobak. It talks almost exclusively about the CHOICES in jobs. It actually has a fallacy in it, wherein it states that "unmarried women who've never had a child actually earn more than unmarried men". The study to which that fact is linked actually states that "The earning power of young single women has surpassed that of their male peers in metropolitan areas around the U.S." and states clearly that " ....women on the whole haven't reached equal status in any particular job or education level. For instance, women with a bachelor's degree had median earnings of $39,571 between 2006 and 2008, compared with $59,079 for men at the same education level, according to the Census. The Tobak article omits the fact that unmarried women make more only do so IN SOME METROPOLITAN AREAS, not overall. Ergo I find that article suspicious, and the entire opinion piece is about the CHOICE differences between men and women, which is not what is at issue, tho' I take hope from the fact that such a trend is developing.

Thus I find none of the evidence cited to be from any factual study I can accept. While it can be debated back and forth, the fact that when gender isn't KNOWN, equal pay is offered; when it is, different pay is offered--and that backed up by actual facts and studies--bears more weight to me.

THAT is how you debate, Rap and Troll, with facts and figures, not with opinions, and pertinent to the issue at hand, not about job choices or faulty quotations.

Shall we continue this sidetrack? Or go back to the issue of the thread, which is about CONTRACEPTION and a woman's right to choose, not about pay differences by gender. Or we can continue that, if anyone on your side wants to actually DEBATE the issue...either one.

We need to remember that Rap likes to make flat statements off the top of his head, with no actual knowledge of fact, and isn't willing to stand by what he says or prove it. He doesn't take any of this seriously, he's just here to spout rhetoric and, I guess, feel like he knows it all? or like things are true just because he says they are? or that nobody has the right to question his statements? I don't know. But I DO know this, from his own words:

Hmmmm... You say the pay disparity is "next to nil", and then you offer up this piece, which claims to "explain about one-quarter of the wage gap."

So if women are paid on average nearly 25% less than men in the same job, and you've explained "about one-quarter of the wage gap", you've taken care of around 6% of the pay differential.

If you were paid nearly 20% less than someone doing the exact same job as you, would you say the pay differential was "next to nil"?

Experts say that the gender pay gap touted at Tuesday night's debate by President Obama is simply not true, and that even his own White House staff pays men more than women if the same erroneous statistical manipulation is used.

Journalist Bernard Goldberg has been one of many to discredit this widely held myth.

"I don’t know about you but I’m getting tired of pundits and activists – almost always on the left — who don’t know what they’re talking about, spouting off in the media about how women don’t make as much as men for doing the same work," Goldberg said.

Why do men generally earn more than women? It's because men often do different kinds of work than women, asserts James Sherk at the Heritage Foundation.

“This gender gap is not the result of rampant discrimination. Rather, it exists because men and women often work in different jobs, work different hours, and have different qualifications. When work experience, education, occupation, and hours of work are taken into account, the average woman makes 98 cents for every dollar earned by a man,” Sherk said.

Goldberg writes that anti-business liberals are always saying that cold-hearted companies only care about the bottom line.

"So then why — if it’s true that women are getting paid 77 cents for every dollar a man makes; if women are not getting equal pay for doing the same job — why would any company hire any man at all? Why wouldn’t companies only hire women to do all the work and save 23 percent on their labor costs? This is not a rhetorical question," Goldberg said. "If greedy businessmen are fixated on “maximizing profits” how do we account for so many “overpaid” men in the workforce?"

The National Center for Policy Analysis said in April that the intense focus on a so-called wage gap presented by the U.S. Department of Labor is an exercise in statistical manipulation, espousing a conclusion that is unreal.

Comparing full-time working men and women without holding other factors constant is disingenuous — an analysis that accounts for hours worked, education and industry type would be more enlightening, the policy analysis center reported.

For instance, the Labor Department's 2011 Time Use Survey shows that fulltime men work about 5 percent more each day on the job. So, it should hardly be a surprise that workers who work more do in fact earn more.

Also, the policy analysis center noted that the types of job sectors that men and women tend to dominate has to be considered:

Men dominate fields like construction, manufacturing and trucking — jobs with higher personal risk (both in job security and safety), but with salary premiums to compensate.
Women cluster in service industries, teaching, health care and the social services — jobs with fewer risks, more comfortable conditions, regular hours and greater flexibility.
While radical feminists argue that women are socially pressured into these low-paying positions, the same argument can be made that men, pressured to be the bread-winner, sacrifice comfortable positions to make a better salary.
There also are different approaches that each gender takes to children, according to the policy analysis center, which relied partly on data reported by Carrie Lukas, Managing Director of the Independent Women’s Forum.

Two new parents tend to respond oppositely to having a child. The mother tends to seek a positions with greater flexibility and time off (sacrificing salary in the process), while the father actually seeks further salary gains.

Lukas said that when these and other factors are taken into account, the wage gap usually disappears and sometimes even reverses.

"Feminist hand-wringing about the wage gap relies on the assumption that the differences in average earnings stem from discrimination," Lukas wrote in The Wall Street Journal last April. "Thus the mantra that women make only 77 percent of what men earn for equal work. But even a cursory review of the data proves this assumption false."

Market Watch, a respected business publication that’s part of The Wall Street Journal, noted that Obama said in a June speech that “women still earn just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns.”

In fact, an Obama campaign TV ad, entitled “First Law,” which began airing June 21, showed the same 77 percent figure.

There's just one problem — it isn’t true, Market Watch columnist Diana Furchtgott-Roth wrote on July 26.

For instance, she pointed out the fallacies of one of the primary myths in particular, that women get less pay for equal work.

Furchtgott-Roth said it's a spurious assertion that women are paid 77 cents for a man’s wage dollar by comparing the earnings of all full-time men with those of all full-time women.

It's a bogus comparison two reasons. First, it lumps together men and women who work different numbers of hours — any hours above 35 hours per week. On average, full-time women work fewer hours than full-time men, often because they prefer it.

When comparisons are made between men and women who work 40 hours per week, women make 87 percent of men’s earnings, according to the Labor Department.

For men and women who work 30 to 34 hours a week, women make more, 109 percent of men’s earnings.

Second, is that the gap claims averages for each gender earnings from many and disparate vocations. For example, it averages women who work as social workers with men who work as investment bankers; female elementary school teachers with male engineers; and male loggers with female administrative assistants.

For their own reasons, many women enter so-called “helping professions,” such as nursing, teaching, elder care, health services, nutrition, social work. These occupations pay less than do some more dangerous and physically-demanding lines of work that attract more men — engineering, mining, operating construction machinery.

Legitimate comparisons look at men and women with the same job tenure in the same position at the same firm. If there’s a big difference under those circumstances, there may be discrimination, giving women grounds to sue. Federal law forbids discrimination, and permits such suits.

When economists compare men and women in the same job with the same experience, the analysts find that they earn about the same.

Studies by former Congressional Budget Office director June O’Neill, University of Chicago economics professor Marianne Bertrand, and the research firm Consad all found that women are paid practically the same as men.

And while President Obama says he’s in favor of equal pay, Furchtgott-Roth said her calculations from 2012 pay data published by the White House finds that women staffers there were paid 91 cents on a man’s dollar. That is, of course, if one calculates the figure, incorrectly, based on simple averages by gender.

Furchtgott-Roth said this is presumably because female staffers in these offices were not as senior as male staffers, or they held different types of positions, just as in the workforce as a whole.

Us "lefties" hate fighting Mr. Auraptor. So I offer a bit of personal history, which admittedly may prove nothing in light of your current belief system, but here it goes:

My sister, several years ago, worked for a hospital in the capacity of Social Work Assistant for 4 years. Her educational background included her MSW (Master's in Social Work) which means she studied for several years after graduating from an accredited 4-year college. Her specialty was pre and postnatal care of women of all ages. She was overqualified for the position she held and was continually promised a more suitable position once it became available. She had an exemplary record in every sense of her employ.

It came to pass that a suitable position, that of Social Work Administrator, became available. She was told to submit her resume (even though they had it on record with her credentials) and that an interview would be set up. Several weeks passed and no word. Meanwhile she kept seeing a parade of men and women walking into the hospital administrator's office. She asked for a sit down with the administrator and confronted him, she was told that a new hire was now her boss with the title of Social Work Administrator. The kicker is that she was asked to train him, in addition, he was far less experienced and did not have his MSW. In other words she knew more than he and was bypassed for the job. He would make far more than she, with less in education and experience, yet she was asked to show him the ropes.

She handed in her resignation the next day.

Regardless of gender, she was more than qualified to handle the position.
You may say that the hospital administrator is perfectly within his rights to hire whomever he wishes. Indeed. The posted requirements included MSW plus a minimum of 3000 hours clinical experience - of which he had neither.
Yet she was to pass on her knowledge and expertise to this man.

My sister is far from being a left-leaning liberal, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the blatant discrimination here.

By the way, found this in an article regarding Polar Ice Caps:

Oh indeed - when we we still together my ex worked in the supply chain of the Big Three automakers and boy howdy you wanna talk about some dinosaurs...

There was a certain supervisor at a certain company who not only had her more or less doing his damn job for him, but when she called him out on paying the JANITOR more than her he gave her a get-back-in-the-kitchen speech which was interrupted by her pre-printed resignation hitting him between the eyes.
Of course, I offered to adjust his attitude but what happened after that was just soooo much worse...

The new company she worked for had a bunch of bids in for a very large contract (like make-or-break your company kinda big), one of which was from her former company and she *knew* they could not actually make good on their promises cause a large part of the work dumped off on her was making excuses for that very problem...
And so they send a representative to argue the point with her, who happens to be that former supervisor, who all but flees the building in terror, and needless to say their bid was kicked to the curb, resulting in insolvency and being bought out by another company which vulture-liquidated them and then got plowed under themselves by someone else, Rexel, I think it was.

Anyhows, moral of the story, never, EVER piss off my ex.
S'funny, despite the management of her current employment being Japanese and conservative, and as a rule even more sexist than all but the stupidest American execs, they treat her with respect cause she really is quite good at what she does and cause every time they don't she manages to make them look stupid for it, and "face" is very important to them.

But yeah, that women still get jerked around in the workplace, that's a fact, and not just the workplace either, there's some folks at INS who flat IGNORE anything she says, does or submits cause she's 'just a girl' and who the hell do you think has to go down there and sort it with those chair polishing sumbitches but me, grrrrr.

For mine own, I care about ability to do the fekkin job more than anything else, and yet seem to wind up with a predominantly female crew by a small but noticeable margin, mostly cause too damn many male applicants have what I call "Zimmerman Syndrome", which is a quick way to get shown the door by me.
