Hello,

I voted for Obama, but I did it with a sense of distaste. Only the abject horror inspired by the opposition was able to move me to choose him, the lesser of evils.

But in the wake of my support, I thought it would be good to remember what he has done that we don't like. A concrete thing he did personally. He has no deniability. He did it himself or verifiably gave the order.

We probably all have our pet peeves. Things that bother us. Mine begin with something he did before he was sworn in as president.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/11/obama.netroots/index.html

He promised, and he broke the promise. He ensured that the government could order companies to violate us again. All they needed was a permission slip.

It was absolutely essential that he take a stand on this issue. A firm stand. He needed to oppose this with all of his might. Even if he would have lost, it was a stand worth taking. Instead, he affirmed that "Just following orders" was a good enough excuse for breaking the laws that protect us.

Perhaps he felt this was the 'lesser of two evils.' If so, I think it was a fool's bargain. The lessons learned from this amnesty can't be taken back. 'Just following orders' is back on the table, and it is an excuse that will outlive him.

I was so mad when I found out. I'm still mad today.

Hello,

What I might have hoped was a one-time-deal turned out not to be.

Torture is illegal and also abominable. Obama said as much. Then he promised not to prosecute.

"Just following orders" was excuse enough to violate human rights.

Quote:

The Center for Constitutional Rights, a nonprofit agency founded by attorneys who worked for the civil rights movement of the 1960s, also panned the decision not to prosecute.

"It is one of the deepest disappointments of this administration that it appears unwilling to uphold the law where crimes have been committed by former officials," the organization said.

Once again, it is an excuse that will survive his term in office. It is an excuse that will allow terrible things to happen again.

Told the world that Gitmo would be closed with in a year of him taking office.

Now, did he know that promise was one he never could keep, or did he intend to do that, but upon one of the few intel briefings he did attend ( hey, it's a fair criticism ! ) was told in no uncertain terms that - no, Gitmo had to remain open.

Hello,

Another chance to take a stand. To do what is right even if you might lose, even if it's a hopeless battle. Because people will remember that you stood up when everyone else sat down.

Indefinite Detention bears the signature of this President's approval.

Once again, he failed us. We will pay the price for this in subsequent administrations and on into forever for all I know.

Every time a line needs to be drawn on principle, this president smudges it. Three Strikes.

If anyone better had been available to step up to the plate, I'd have called this man OUT. The better of two devils is no victory. Merely a more comfortable descent into oblivion.

I'm actually FOR Drone strikes, and give Obama credit where it's due. Dunno why W didn't use them more.

Patriot Act needs to go, I'll cede that point.

And since we don't torture, I'd have to agree w/ Barry, on 2 out of these 3 things.

Because you don't understand the technology or the R&D needed, or the troop traing time required (which is what we're using them FOR at the moment).

So, before Obama, there was no RandD for such drones to exist ?

Are you actually saying that, in a round about way, Obama told W " You didn't build that ! " when speaking of TODAY'S cutting edge technology ? For the drones he's using to kill bad guys ?

Hello,

I think he's saying the opposite, actually.

W was busy building the drone force that Obama is using now. W didn't use more drones because he didn't have them yet, didn't have sufficient trained operators yet, and they weren't as good yet as they are becoming now.

Are you for other nations using drones against our troops or our interests?

Would you support using drone strikes against homegrown right-wing militias, for example?

Hello,

Actually, I think they may be deploying drones with 'less lethal' weapons soon for crowd control, followed by fully lethal variants for SWAT teams to use when they can't get a convenient firing position.

I'm fairly certain we HAD drones , and in the needed #'s, to carry out the strikes. It was more just a change in policy, not so much hardware. They started pretty soon after O got into office. Of course, W didn't get any super secret stealth drones " lost ", to Iran, now did he ? Took Obama to pull that one off.

Or maybe he operates Wikipedia. A quick look at the entry for "Predator Drone" shows quite a number of deployments prior to 2009. Not near as many as since then, but there wer apparently lots of drones flying pre-2009.

What was Obama's motive? Murder requires premeditation and motive. Otherwise it's manslaughter.

There ARE things, however, that Obama has done that could be called murder, and this embassy thing is the least of them. Frankly the embassy was a failure of our intelligence people (again) not watching Al Qaeda cells enough on freakin' 9-11, and for a while before that too.

In order for Stevens to be killed, there had to have been a mole protecting him, who then directed the other Al Qaeda members to the hiding spot. Someone seriously failed their background check and profiling when they hired this mole for additional security at the embassy, and the president doesn't perform those checks.

You want to call Obama a murderer, look no further than the war crimes under his watch. There you go. The embassy debacle isn't an example though.

The president receives an instant teleportation device when he gets into office, which then extends to troops stationed an hour away from the embassy, and Obama is secretly Rambo. True Story.

No matter how many boots you put on the ground at the scene, it would have happened the same way because Stevens had a mole on his staff.

Hello Sky,

It was no mistake that I used those words 'lesser of evils' with both his choices and mine. It was an intentional echo.

But there is an important difference, if you care to see it.

Wrong Choice................Right Choice
Torture Amnesty..............No Torture Amnesty
Indefinite Detention.........No Indefinite Detention
Wiretap Amnesty..............No Wiretap Amnesty
Obama........................??????

There was no viable alternative to Obama in play. I wish there was.

Even worse, Stevens HIMSELF requested more security, US security, ( and not the local fare ), but was denied. Obama, and this admin, had a fairy tale to promote, about a fab-o Arab spring, and how al Qaeda was scattered to the 4 winds, because G.I.-Obama took bin Landen down, and all was right in the world.

Reality ? That would have harshed Barry's pre-election buzz, man. Mad folks ask too many questions.

It's possible that the State Department wanted to boost the confidence of the Libyan government by giving them responsibility for the security of our embassy and consulates in country, or was concerned about offending them by acting as though they could not.

When Libya is one of the few places where there are,
A. large, organized, heavily armed jihadist forces
B. almost no organized government, army, or police, and
C. a lot of civilian U.S. government employees,
It seems strange that, although Defense Secretary Panetta said that U.S. forces were on high alert for the 9/11 anniversary, the nearest designated quick-reaction forces capable of taking on a large group of organized, heavily armed jihadists in Libya were in Italy and the U.S., effectively out of reach.

You don't use the same definition for torture that we use. Mine includes waterboarding.

If I say we torture because we waterboard, you'll say waterboarding isn't torture. It's a pointless argument for both of us, because neither of us can agree on the basic premise of the argument.

Geezer: None of that suggests that Obama wanted or encouraged the attack on Stevens. It might possibly suggest negligence, which is manslaughter.

If you could show that Obama had something to gain from Steven's death, or disliked Steven's personally, you would have a case for murder.

I still don't think approving more security would have changed anything because the mole would still have been there.

I choose to be angry at Obama about other things.

Because you distort and , well LIE about what it is that is supposedly so frightening.

Show me where we ACTUALLY tortured anyone, I'll be on your side.

Hello,

Since you don't consider depriving people of the ability to breathe to be torture, you are so deep into the problem that you can't even see it.

You don't use the same definition for torture that we use. Mine includes waterboarding.

The entire country considered it torture since WWII - it was only after the NeoCons decided to re-define it that morons like Rappy decided it never was torture.

If I say we torture because we waterboard, you'll say waterboarding isn't torture. It's a pointless argument for both of us, because neither of us can agree on the basic premise of the argument.

The way we waterboarded, isn't torture. Torture is when you do something to somebody, no matter what they say or do, anyways. To avoid waterboarding, or sleep deprivation, or having to listen to an endless loop of Cindi Lauper, Barney - The Purple Dinosaur, or what ever, these guys at Gitmo could have given up the information. Hell, most of them live better at Club Gitmo than they would over in Afghanistan. Only they don't get to shag any little boys, or cut off parts of women, who dare to do something as evil as LEARN , in a school.

Damn,we so oppressive !

Hello,

This re-definition of torture needs to be preserved.

Per Mr. Raptor, Torture isn't torture if we promise to stop when you surrender information.

And by that measure, it matters not what you do if the victim has information you need. It's possible to justify any procedure of pain.

Bullshit ! You just arbitrarily tacked on your own opinion to my words, and created a completely fictional view of what I said, making it something I NEVER said.

Kinda hard for anyone to win an argument, hell, have a discussion, when you're doing the talking for both sides.

Hello Mr. Raptor.

You Defined it, not me:

That's your definition of torture. Show me where I'm wrong instead of getting offended at your own words.

Because they could make it stop by giving up information, it wasn't torture. Per you.

If someone offered you two unthinkable choices, such as kill your child or kill you, you might pick killing yourself as the "lesser of two evils."

Or you can say, "Fuck you. I am not going to choose." Anything else is a fool's bargain.

I only say this to you, Anthony, because I think you of all people here would understand me.

Hello,

I do understand your position. But there is a price for not choosing, because not choosing is also a choice, and it has its own consequences.

Although probably in this particular state, I could have afforded to ignore the whole shebang. I may have an inflated idea of my own impact on the process.

Voting against that damn sheriff felt good, though, if nothing else.

Anthony -

You fucking cherry picked my words, and then added to them, to come up w/ your own complete line of bullshit, and then tried to lay it all on me as MY words.

A few choice words of mine you INTENTIONALLY left out...

The way we waterboarded, isn't torture

Spare me this phony civility you lay on here, with your 'invisible' sig, insulting me every time we post, while then trying to put on this act of yours.

Be a man, or at least try to. Stop 'hiding' your true thoughts. Got something to say, say it for all to see. Coward.

Really not a fan of liars and punks, Anthony. You're showing yourself to be both.

Hello Mr. Raptor,

Do you want me to un-invisible my signature?

The signature is there as a personal reminder about your true nature. I keep it invisible because reminding YOU of your own reprehensible words causes you such distress.

However, if you WANT to see it, I can accommodate you.

No, my view is MY view. We can disagree to disagree, but don't cherry pick my words, twist my meaning, and then claim I'm some sort of gorram monster because of the BS concocted out of pure imagination.

It's really very simple.

Start bearing false witness, and vilifying me for that which I DON'T think, for things I NEVER said, on top of the things we already disagree, then there's no point in carrying on this charade of pleasant discourse any longer. It all devolves into a dog pile on the one guy who won't bend to the will of everyone else, with an array of goofy sigs and gifs, and let's not forget the cartoonish emoticons.

I'd like to think that our brief existence in the Cosmos is spent doing better things than all this. Again.

Hello,

All your words are laid out, there for all to see.

I don't know how you think you can argue with them through the conduit of me.

It would be better for you to apologize for the things you've said that you regret, rather than denying them.

You have yet to explain how I got it wrong. You've only railed.
