We have enough megachurches here, I say it's about damn time. Sure, make exemptions for charitable programs performed, but for those who do little more than jaw-jack, I think they should pick up the slack. And you'd get a two-fer, because most would probably start a program rather than pay taxes.

Might cut into their Lexus and hooker buying budjet, but we gotta start somewhere...

I don't disagree. Tithing has been the foundation of much personal wealth through the entire history of the various sects. The point of the tithing historically was to provide for the needs of the impoverished and the welfare of the priests who had taken vows of poverty. This often went ignored. Nowadays taxes are used at least in part for this purpose. I can't say that there is more efficiency and less misappropriation with taxes, but misuse at least can be answered in the courts.

It's worse than that, Byte - don't forget Shrubs "Faith Based Initiative" bullshit, which funneled tax money INTO religious orgs which often as not used it for other purposes than helping anyone but themselves, and in part financed the Hellcamp known as Teen Challenge.

Plus the Gov has always been "selective" in WHICH religions get the tax break, both of which are by default a violation of the First Amendment.

I dunno about taxing their income, although I am not against the idea in principle, but taxing their property, that is only just, and supports the community in which the church is based - especially those ritzy ass churches in the ghetto where people who LIVE there ain't even welcome in em.

Sounds good, let's do it...
*waves wand.

I was just thinking how much was said about Romney and what he donated to the Mormons. Wouldn't you looooove to know what they do with all their millions? I remember reading a comparitive about just our local churches years ago and about 60% of donations just went to support the heads of most of them, and about 30% to upkeep and projects.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

It seems to me the rules on taxes for nonprofit organizations should not include special status for religion.

You're either a nonprofit or you're not, by objective criteria outside of belief systems.

Sounds great to me! Considering what their money has gone for in the past (especially the Catholic Church, with their cathedrals, pope-ish splendor and art), I think it's well past time!

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.
