It may well be that the GOP will eventually emerge stronger and better if they can take on such a challenge.

Well said, Anthony; the comparison isn't that far off.

I do fear, however, that "eventually" may be a very long time coming, given all the dodges, rationalizations and excuses in which the GOP is currently engaging. Especially the one about nothing having gone far enough right...I don't think that one is particularly healthy for the party.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

They say you have to hit rock bottom before you properly re-assess yourself.

Perhaps they need to go 'right' until they go 'right' off a cliff, and then they will learn and reform and improve. It might come as soon as the next election cycle. Or it might possibly take a decade. Even two.

By that time, the Democratic party may have devolved into the more sinister party that needs opposing, and the Republicans may be in a position to save us from them.
