"While I will negotiate over many things, I will not have another debate with this Congress over whether or not they should pay the bills that they've already racked up through the laws that they've passed," Obama said.

Hours later Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell swiped back at the president in an op-ed piece he wrote for Yahoo News.

"I have news for him," McConnell wrote. "The moment that he and virtually every elected Democrat in Washington signed off on the terms of the current arrangement, it was the last word on taxes. That debate is over."

But to get through the debt ceiling, the self-imposed limit on how much the U.S. government may borrow, there will have to be debate over spending, he insisted.

The ceiling of $16.394 trillion has already been reached. Excerpt from http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/03/politics/new-congress/index.html?hpt=hp_

I'll never understand this one, except that it's an opportunity for Republicans to make another mess. It's like buying a car (or let's see, like your wife buying a car, since not ALL of the spending came from this Congress--tho' plenty did), then saying 'I don't like that car, so I won't pay for it'. If they don't want the car, then work to get rid of it like adults, don't just use the debt as a way to blackmail the government into getting what they want, while endangering our credit rating again and creating battle after battle which keeps the government from doing its job!

Of COURSE there needs to be cuts in spending. They HAVE the majority in Congress; work on realistic bills, make their case to the American people, compromise, work it out. Only be willing to make those cuts in things THEY like (like defense) rather than just what the country NEEDS. This Republican Congress doesn't seem to have a grasp of the most basic ways to deal with things. I just don't get it. EVERYTHING is a fight these days--not just a fight, but a HUGE fight on anything they can come up with that holds the country hostage. No wonder our government is dysfunctional!
