6/23: A 9-year-old girl was wounded Friday by a .22-caliber rifle, and a local man was charged with allowing the child and two others to hold the weapon, according to the Evansville Police department.

...the children, aged 10, 9 and 8 were in the 300 block of North Ninth Avenue when Ricketts asked them to watch his dog while he went to a liquor store.

Upon returning, Ricketts, who lives at 316 N. Ninth Ave., retrieved some firearms from the upstairs of his residence and let the children hold them, police said.

Ricketts told police he had removed the rifle’s magazine but didn’t know it still had a round in its chamber. He stated he received permission from parents of at least one of the children to show them the guns.
