Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Quote:

Democrats and independents who lean toward the Democratic Party are generally pleased with their leaders’ efforts; 72 percent say Democratic leaders are taking the party the right direction.

It’s a far different story on the Republican side, where half as many partisans and Republican-leaning independents, 37 percent, say their leaders are taking the GOP in the right direction. Fifty-two percent instead say their own leaders are headed the wrong way, up 20 points from last August (when the White House seemed winnable) and a majority for the first time in six poll results dating to 1994.

That disaffection is apparent in another measure: Just 21 percent of Americans in this survey identify themselves as Republicans, matching the fewest since November 2009. GOP allegiance has dropped from an annual average of 31 percent in 2003 to annual averages of 23 or 24 percent the past five years straight. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2013/07/policy-divisions-challeng

Furthermore, the poll reveals that 68 percent of Americans want more cooperation in Washington while 26 percent oppose compromise. Among very conservative voters, only 48 percent want zero cooperation from the GOP. That means an ever increasing number of Republicans want their party to compromise, further proof that the GOP only listens to its most extreme members. Because the way Republicans are acting in Congress right now is certainly not the way most people want them to, and that apparently includes a large number of Republicans.

No wonder there's so much dissent in Republican politics; looks like more and more may be seeing what's happening to their party and listening to their voters. Too bad that extreme majority still has so much power...

Personally, I hope those saner voices start getting heard; as always, I WANT a viable two-party system and people in my government who work for the good of everyone.
