MORE than 1300 people were killed in fierce Syrian army bombardment with chemical weapons of Damascus suburbs, the opposition said, branding it a "massacre" and calling for international intervention.

The accusation, which was strongly denied by Damascus, came as a team of UN inspectors was in Syria to probe previous allegations of chemical weapons strikes levelled against both sides during the 29-month conflict.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's office said he was ``shocked'' by the reports and that UN weapons experts in Syria to probe previous allegations were in discussions with Damascus.

Security Council members France, Britain, the United States, Luxembourg and South Korea requested the meeting, which was held behind closed doors.

Britain, France, Germany and the United States sent a formal request for an investigation of the incident to Ban's office, citing ``credible reports of the use of chemical weapons'' in a letter

Still not seeing much in the way of coverage of this on US news, but BBC has videos and images.

From what's been shown, many appear to have been inside some building, and died. With the proximity of children and civilians, I wonder if this wasn't possibly a rebel chem weapons facility, where something went really wrong.

Hamas loves to hide behind women in children when striking Israel with rockets. I wonder if this wasn't a similar case, where they were making chem weapons in a 'safe house' for civilians, to avoid being targeted by the Syrian military.

We may never know.

from CNN.com, the Frenchman speaks out:
Quote:

Hours after the closed-door meeting, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told CNN affiliate BFMTV that "a reaction of force must be taken" if the allegations are true.

"If the U.N. Security Council cannot do it, decisions will be made otherwise," Fabius said. But, he said, sending ground troops to Syria is out of question.

Sanctions. Yes.

And strongly worded proclamations speaking out against such horrific acts.

That should do the job.

Estimates of death have been bumped UP to around 1,800 now.

Possibly.

It's kinda sad that we can't trust either side because they both seem to be terrible. You see something like this and you want to do something about it... But then you see your options for governments to support and you realize helping either of them would probably make things worse.

This is a miserable wretched world.
