Syrian Anarchist Challenges the Rebel/Regime Binary View of Resistance

What can folks outside of Syria do to provide support?

For people outside, it’s tough. In terms of material support, there’s very little that can be done. The only thing that I can think of that's possible on a large scale is discursive/intellectual support. The left has been very hostile to the Syrian uprising, treating the worst elements of anti-regime activity as if they are the only elements of it, and accepting regime narratives at face value. What I’d ask people to do is to help set that record straight and show that there are elements of the Syrian uprising that are worth supporting. Help break that harmful binary that the decision is between Assad or Al Qaeda, or Assad and US imperialism. Be fair to the history and sacrifices of the Syrian people by giving an accurate account. Perhaps it’s too late, and the hegemonic narratives are too powerful in the present to overcome. But if people start now, maybe the history books can at least be fair.

Not that it will be, when written by the yellow journalism warmongering scum we call media these days, but worth a short word for the folks screwed and forgotten who want to (horror of horrors!) live in peace and be left the hell alone, in between all the dickheads scrambling over each other for the handle of the whip to beat everyone else with.

We should build a fence around Syria, give them MORE gas, then forget about them. When they're all dead Trump can buy the place cheap and build a nice retirement community.

This is why I think donating to the refugee camps is the way to go. Because then you're helping people who were caught in the middle and ran, and if any of them have relatives who decided to fight for their sake, at least they'll know the families are taken care of.

It's not much though, because without actually being on the ground there, can't really ensure help gets where it's needed, and avoids the jerkasses.

There are actual pro-democracy groups buried in the muck. Try finding them, tho.

No, McCain is all about toppling Assad. I don't think he really cares who comes after. He and the neocons are obssessed with this grand plan to invade Afghanistan (check), Iraq (check), Libya (check), Syria (oops!), and Iran. And look what clusterfucks came out of the invasions. If McCain hasn't figured out that our invasions only seem to provide a breeding ground for Al Qaida, then he's either irremediably demented or totally propagandized, I'm not sure that it matters which.

Really, at this point the biggest beneficiary of this regime-toppling program seems to be Saudi Arabia; it's certainly not "democracy". BTW Saudi Arabia is completely horrified by the idea of popular movements, and will do anything to stamp out democracy.

Just to add another wrinkle into the equation, Saudi Arabia and Qatar - altho both Sunni- are at odds with how to proceed into the future. Qatar- which the Saudis sneeringly refer to as "300 people and a television station" (Al Jazeera)- believes in popular Muslim movements, specifically the Muslim Brotherhood and its various franchises in the ME. There has been something of an arms/ money race between the two oil nations. You'll find Qatar persistently on the side of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Saudi Arabia persistently on the side of Al Qaida. Between these two suppliers, secular democrats are totally swamped.

Certainly the geopolitical analysts in the huge security complex that we pay 50% of our taxes to are fully aware of the players and their interests. This comes as no surprise to people whose business is to take objective stock of winners and losers. The curiosity is why Obama has been so far out of the loop.

Russia gave UN 100-page report in July blaming Syrian rebels for Aleppo sarin attack

Quote:

...the report included detailed scientific analysis of samples that Russian technicians collected at the site of the alleged attack, Khan al Asal in northern Syria. The attack killed 26 people.

A U.N. spokesman, Farhan Haq, confirmed that Russia delivered the report in July.

The report itself was not released. But the statement drew a pointed comparison between what it said was the scientific detail of the report and the far shorter intelligence summaries that the United States, Britain and France have released to justify their assertion that the Syrian government launched chemical weapons against Damascus suburbs on Aug. 21. The longest of those summaries, by the French, ran nine pages. Each relies primarily on circumstantial evidence to make its case, and they disagree with one another on some details, including the number of people who died in the attack.
