Uhhh, she's forgetting one small fact. Bachmann is correct that members of congress are required to obtain health care coverage from the insurance exchanges. They lost their employer sponsored health plans thanks to an amendment by Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), so he's the one she should be bitching to.

Bachmann also neglected to bring up (for some reason) that the amendment, one of a number of Republican changes that were included in the ACA, was the basis for the “congress exempted itself from the law” claim. As late as April 2013, Bachmann was complaining about the “exemption” on her Facebook page.

But the Grassley amendment is only one part of the “Obamacare exemption” story. Along with losing their employer sponsored plans, congresspeople and their staffs were going to lose the employer contribution to the cost of their premiums. Grassley told Rollcall that it was never his intention for that to be taken away.

So, in September 2013, the federal Office of Personnel Management ruled that Congress could keep the employer contribution. This caused another stir among those who have been fighting the law. They immediately seized on this as “proof” that Congress was exempt from Obamacare without mentioning that Republicans went right along with the “exemption” that wasn’t.

Bachmann never bothered to mention that when she selects a policy on the exchange she will not have to pay the full price of her premium. She will pay part, and the federal government will pick up the rest.

But hey, none of that is nearly as much fun as being able to scream "Obama took away my health insurance!"

Nice one, and very On Point, thanx! I didn't even think about that; rather than deal with the situation, they just gouged and gouged, made no changes and now are trying to gouge some more by trying to con people into buying expensive "replacement" insurance for the policies THEY chose to cancel.

The American Way.

I think Obama meant, "Nothing the government will do will force your insurance company to drop you." That ain't exactly what he said, of course, and he didn't say, "We won't prevent your company from dumping you if they choose to."

That's what Obama could SAY he "meant", and of course it's an ass-backwards way of saying "I didn't lie". But he knew, they knew, the insurance companies knew.

What's interesting, when I think about it, is yeah, the insurance companies DID know--so, being so against the ACA from the get-go, why didn't THEY speak up and "explain" why Obamacare would "make" THEM cancel people's policies? Interesting, isn't it, that they kept quiet, when of course they knew just as Obama and everyone else involved did that they'd start canceling policies...

The cynical answer might be that they didn't want people prepared and looking to around for coverage, but preferred to have it happen suddenly, giving them first chance to send out little notices saying "We're cancelling that particular policy, but that's okay, 'cuz here's your replacement..." (for which they could charge, oh, you know, more than people could get on the exchanges...).
