The universe is a hologram and everything you can see - including this article and the device you are reading it on - is a mere projection.
This is according to a controversial model proposed in 1997 by theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena.

Until now the bizarre theory had never been tested, but recent mathematical models suggest that the mind-boggling principle could be true.

In other news, being hit by an apple hurts. More on this from Professor Isaac Newton.

This blows away the idea that inside each little atom of our fingernail , there could be an entire smaller universe, regressing to infinity. it's more like we're living in an actual Matrix construct.

And there IS no red pill !

AHHH!!!

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Sorry, that was dry. This is actually very interesting stuff, if not exactly new or surprising.

The main problem I have with it all is that I haven't seen anyone make the next logical leap about the nature of the universe. Only seeing the forest for the trees, you know?

What really will blow everyone's minds is when everyone realizes WHY the mathematic equations of a flat cosmological background with no gravity is so similar to the mechanics of a black hole.

And then you get into the really fun stuff like the flow of time and universe expansion and the gritty details about a holographic universe and so on.

Not quite. When they talk about virtual particles and holograms, they aren't using exactly the same definitions as the laymen terms.

While information in the universe can be reduced to a very simple measure, and while this layer of the universe is a projection of that information, it doesn't mean what we are and experience is not real.

However, it may be that how we perceive the universe does not fully describe what or how it is. And I don't mean that in a whimsical mysticism way. I mean that there are multiple frames of reference and direction that might all be valid.

No doubt. And withsome it's more so than others.

Ah. If one of the options that I'm thinking of is valid, it's possible none of us perceive the universe "correctly."

But it's also all relative.

As an example, in some cases a person falling towards a black hole's event horizon actually would perceive that they are moving away from it. For them, relative to an outsider's view, time seems to flow backwards. This persists until the moment they cross the event horizon, when they are obliterated - but in some sense they are also frozen in the very instant before obliteration, forever moving away from the black hole.

(to make this more complicated, calculations about black holes seem to indicate that there could be two different perceptions of time, one going towards the blackhole, and one going backwards. A traveler caught in the gravity of the blackhole might see THEMSELVES in the time stream moving away from the blackhole. One of them is the projection of the data entering the black hole. Now here's what will boggle your senses - which ONE? You could make valid arguments for either)

This is some what unnerving. It's basically what Creationists say, when trying to debunk " science ". Only their point is that , since we can't know ANYTHING with 100% absolute certainty, then what good are our theories and observations ?

Best as I can say is we do live in a some what predicable universe. The sun will generally come up in the East, set in the West (via our perspective ) and so forth. But they then take the absurd view that, since we can't KNOW anything, then the bible , being the word of God, is all anyone needs to " know ".

A bit off the thread topic, but just a passing thought I had, per the perceptions of the universe comment.

Carry on.

We can know it, because we can prove it. Math does not lie.

The problem is that the concept of time may not be acting according to our perceptions and may not be uniform. But if this is so, then the math, and our logic, will show us.

What I am saying is that we may not be 14 billion years after the big bang. We might be t-minus 14 billion years to it, but by various cosmological tricks perceive time flowing the opposite direction.

That is only one option, but to fully understand the universe it's an option we have to consider. Ultimately it all depends on just what was the big bang and what IS the cosmological horizon and what is it's structure. But I'm sure of one thing. The study of black holes and white holes is the key.

Oh, I agree. But the YEC would come back w/ saying something like " Math isn't real, it doesn't exist in nature. That's just man's observations " or some such. And then the real kicker... it's God's universe, so he can do what ever he wants.

...

Even the non-Gnostic Christians in the past have said that math is the LANGUAGE of God. This is worse than merely being a luddite, it shows contempt for knowledge itself. As well as their own history.

You really have heard them make such arguments? I find it hard to believe that even YEC are divorced so thoroughly from the concept of logic as their basis of moral philosophy.

Yup.... I was wondering for quite a while if we weren't just some stray dingle-berry off some old and tired Titan's asshiar.....

Oh shit, you put it in 3D?????

Who cares. Nobody bought any 3D TVs anyhow.

Don't give up TV PEOPLE!

It's just too bad you brainacs didn't figure out that technology back in 1999 when I was big pimpin and did all my shopping and Best Buy and paid for worthless 4 year replacement plans.....

Sorry HD/3D TV. You are totally being pissed on now. When we get enough money, or you've sold enough units to Russians and Asians before we bought in to make it cheap, we'll TOTALLY make you the centerpiece of our homes.

Thank you Jack, you have brought the conversation back down to earth. In a blazing fireball, that partially exploded in orbit.

If you listen, you can hear the wailing over in Russia as they pick the glass off their carpets again and chug vodka as a window replacement.

Actually it was funny. Well done.

Hehe Byte.

You know I always get a rise when I make you smile.

Both figuratively and literally....

Mostly figuratively though....

But just a bit literally too though too :)
