Quote: After Phelps was voted out of Westboro Baptist Church this past summer, he was moved out of the church and into a house, where he was watched to ensure he wouldn’t harm himself, a son estranged from the church said Sunday. Phelps eventually stopped eating and drinking, and on Sunday, he was near death, son Nate Phelps said in a Facebook posting. The information also is based on an email sent by Nate Phelps to a Capital-Journal reporter. "(Fred) is at Midland Hospice House where, as of yesterday (Friday), he is comfortable without the respiratory difficulty that he was having the day before and is unresponsive," Nate Phelps wrote, quoting a message sent to him. For many years, Fred Phelps Sr. and his wife, Margie Marie Phelps, lived in an upper floor of the church. On Sunday morning, the church and surrounding streets where many of the members live were quiet. Drain declined to comment Sunday on a report that Fred Phelps Sr. has been excommunicated from the conservative church, known for its controversial anti-gay stance that he founded in the 1950s. Drain also said Westboro Baptist Church doesn't have a new leader of the church because it doesn't have a designated leader. http://cjonline.com/news/2014-03-16/wbc-spokesman-said-fred-phelps-sr-was-healthy-month-he-entered-hospice

Quote:Despite his avowedly conservative views on social issues, and the early stirrings of the clout Christian evangelicals would enjoy within the Kansas Republican Party, Phelps ran as a Democrat during his brief dabble with politics. He finished a distant third in the 1990 gubernatorial primary, and later ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate and Topeka mayor.

Quote:Westboro Baptist Church Met With ‘Sorry For Your Loss’ Sign Members of the Westboro Baptist Church continued their protests without their longtime pastor Fred Phelps outside the Midland Theatre in Downtown Kansas City. More than 20 protesters protested pop star's Lorde concert, however it was another message that stuck out. A group of counter protesters held up a sign that read "sorry for your loss." Megan Coleman helped make the sign. "We realized that it wasn't so much about antagonizing them," she said, "but sending out the countered safe that we are here for people who need that message and need that positivity." Yet, the message meant nothing to Steve Drain a longtime Westboro member. "I don't even know what they're saying," he said. Despite the lack of care for their message expressing condolences, Coleman has noticed that the Westboro protests have had a ripple effect, in fact a positive impact. "It still does kind of bring other people together and so I think it's kind of counter-productive on that end," she said. http://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/westboro-baptist-church-protests-lorde-concert-first-protest-since-phelps-passing
