Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Study reveals flaws in gene testing; results often conflict

The first report from a big public-private project to improve genetic testing reveals it's not as rock solid as many people believe, with flaws that result in some people wrongly advised to worry about a disease risk and others wrongly told they can relax. Researchers say the study shows the need for consumers to be careful about choosing where to have a gene test done and acting on the results.

Researchers say the study shows the need for consumers to be careful about choosing where to have a gene test done and acting on the results, such as having or forgoing a preventive surgery.

"We have very clear documentation that there are differences in what patients are getting" in terms of how tests on the same gene variations are interpreted, said the study leader, Heidi Rehm, genetics lab chief at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. (read more at the above link)

In this case the 'you' who built it is you and me and our tax money, and the scientists, staff and facilities we funded who did the basic research. The 'it' is the study of the basic biochemistry of genes, the research in developing and testing the concepts that underlie the technology, and the myriad of studies that relate genes - as much as possible - to known risks. The 'they' are the testing companies, selling you their over-priced, over-hyped and misleading 'service', for a tidy profit.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

SO the answer is: get your medical care from a not-for-profit facility (university-affiliated teaching hospital).

Just like you should get your software from Debian Linux. At least you won't have NSA-approved backdoors built into your OS.

Or if you can, make it yourself.

Yep, capitalism works so well, it's best to avoid it altogether, when you can.
