I hope Donald Trump or Ted Cruz wins the nomination and the party is crushed as Barry Goldwater was in 1964. Then the Texas Republican voters can complain that Trump and Cruz weren't Republican enough. They will find someone even more extreme and that someone will be crushed in the 2020 election along with the Republican majority in Congress.

Not necessarily brilliant because the GOP might zigzag when you expect them to continue straight toward their goals. Once Barry Goldwater lost the Presidential race, despite doing extremely well in the racist Southern states, the GOP got smarter, not stupider. The Republicans' next candidate in 1968 wasn't so obviously racist and he didn't promise to nuke Vietnam. (I know Goldwater said he's not racist and he really would not drop the Bomb, but just because he said it doesn't make it true. Trump and Cruz have made the same kind of quick and easy denials about their plans.) Nixon promised a secret plan to end the Vietnam War if you vote for him. It turned out that the "secret" was the War will end after Nixon is out of office for a year.
