I use the term advisedly because

1) People are restricted from entry, not based on their RELIGION (even Syrian Xtians, Druze, and Yazidis are restricted) but based on nationality,

2) Muslims from other nations are NOT restricted from entry, and

2) Venezuela and N Korea are also included in the ban, so calling this a "Muslim ban" makes as much sense as calling it a "Catholic ban" or a "Korean ban".

In any case, the Supreme Court made a separation between what Trump SAID, versus what Trump DID, and what Trump DID was legal and within his authority.

I agree with the thread that says that Trump is a troll. He often says and tweets things for effect, to manipulate reaction, and not an indication of what he intends to do. I think ALL Presidents and Presidential candidates do that, but Trump's statements are more exaggerated. In any case, it's very important - not only with Trump but also with Obama, GWB, and previous Presidents - to look past what they say and focus on what they do.

Supreme Court Says Religious Bias Only Matters If The Targets Are Christian

Although the court’s decision focused on the powers of the president under the immigration laws, this case at its core was always about whether politicians can demonize and vilify a religious group and still be allowed to implement policies that specifically target that group. The record of religious animus before the Supreme Court was undeniable. Yet, contrary to its statements in Masterpiece Cakeshop, the conservative majority put all that history to the side and allowed Trump’s Muslim ban to remain fully in effect.

In her own dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor scathingly called out this contradiction. The court in Masterpiece Cakeshop had “found less pervasive official expressions of hostility and the failure to disavow them to be constitutionally significant,” she wrote, yet now the majority allowed “a policy first advertised openly and unequivocally as a ‘total and complete shutdown on Muslims entering the United States’” to go forward.

At the end of the day, the only meaningful difference between Masterpiece Cakeshop and Trump v. Hawaii is that Jack Phillips is Christian and the millions of people targeted by the ban are Muslim. The slightest hint of hostility toward religion is intolerable to the Supreme Court when directed at mainstream Christian beliefs. But years of well-documented, unambiguous animus toward Islam does not hold enough weight to invalidate a policy that has no viable alternative justification. Rather than shielding religious minorities who are at risk of persecution against discrimination, the religion clauses in the Constitution are being used by the court to provide exclusive protection for the religious beliefs of one particular religious group — even when those beliefs harm minorities who need protection, as in Masterpiece Cakeshop.

Says you.

You're like the person who cries RACIST! when someone complains about illegal immigration, even if the person is themselves a nonwhite and they're complaining about ALL illegal immigrants, white or not. Wanting to control our borders is not (to me, anyway) a question of "race", it's a question of economics.

This ban does not target "Muslims" because "Muslims" as a group aren't restricted, and OTHER religions are included in the ban. The bans targets certain NATIONS. I don't care how many words you try to wrap around your opinion, you're not making sense.

When the Trump administration really DOES discriminate on the basis of religion, I'll be sure to complain!

WISHY has said some pretty hate-filled things about white males. SECOND has said some pretty hate-filled things about Republicans. Shall we indict WISHY and SECOND for what they said?

When Trump implements a plan to actually ban Muslims, both I and the Supreme Court will be sure to let you know.

Edited to add (ETA): What Trump said was intemperate and divisive. If I were a Muslim in the USA and a loyal citizen, I would feel stung: scared, hurt, sad. And angry. When people like TRUMP ... or WISHY, or SECOND, or anyone else ... disrespect some Americans categorically ... that is prejudiced and wrong, wrong, wrong. Trump, having a bigger megaphone, has far more negative impact than anyone in this teeny-tiny discussion group. So, if you want to talk about the effect of what Trump said, let's discuss that. But that's not what this ruling was about.
