What's next, earthquake?

Every time I see reports of a California wild fire I think, "gods, how is there anything left to burn???

Of course, Trump, ever the big mouth/small brain type, who speaks first, thinks later if at all, suggested it's because of mismanagement. He has to look for someone to blame. It worked in his business empire so why not being president?

He's even gone so far as to suggest he should withhold funding for fire fighting because in his little chick pea sized brain, that would make fighting fires... better?

History will show he was the dumbest f*cking human ever to hold the office.

BRENDA

Saw on Facebook that "Western Town" on the Paramount lot has burned down. Wildfires. Shows like "Firefly" and "Gunsmoke" where filmed there.

Small roads + development boom + high winds + fire = tragedy

Something like 50 people dead and 130 missing. These "urban wildfires" just go to prove there's no such thing as "too big to burn", especially when 60+mph winds are pushing the flames along. There is drone footage of Paradise destruction here.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

In my area of SoCal (somewhat off the base of the foothills) there are some distinct but isolated ridges, appx 500-800ft high and several miles long. So, there was a road going up one of them disappearing between the trees. I drove up it to see what I could see. And what I saw was scary. The so-called roads were barely two lanes wide, long and winding with no cross-streets, no shoulders, and no turn-arounds anywhere, ending in dead ends. And no hydrants and no water. How anyone would buy a house in those fire traps is beyond me. Where is their Spidey-sense telling them IT'S NOT SAFE.

When I was reading about one community near Malibu, where the people were up in arms about the fire - well, it was like that road I drove up. One very narrow, fire-truck-unfriendly way in and out. And if the road happened to be blocked - say, by a fire - you were trapped. And no water except whatever could be tankered in.

Now, I know that in some very unlucky circumstances I too could be fleeing for my life. But at least I have multiple directions to choose at every corner of every block (not to mention the alleys), fire hydrants on every corner, and the LACFD a mile away.

Apparently, Paradise was well-acquainted with fire emergencies. According to NPR, back in 2001 (?) they had such a bad fire that there was a public hearing which came to the conclusion that Paradise HAD to consider escape routes and infrastructure before it continued on its merry development. Well, the city expanded by something like 30% but the escape infrastructure was never improved. There were only two roads out of the city, and one of them was a narrow 2-lane barely-paved road that led right back up into the hills.

I understand the desire to get out the of LA suburban sprawl which has so many of the disadvantages of living in a city with none of the advantages ... plus, the sprawl is just butt-ugly. I drove through some canyons near Escondido and would have LOVED to live there, but then I heard (from two survivors) about a fire that swept though one of those single-road developments nestled in a green shady canyon ... the only reason they survived is because they jumped into their pool while the fire roared around them for an hour ... Yeah, people need to be more alert to what can happen.

I missed this when posted.

Are Californians unconcerned about the runaway fires that Environmentalists have created?
They have fought against Forest Management to reduce wildfires, filing suits against the Interior Dept endlessly, proclaiming that the wildfires should be allowed to burn themselves out. This was at least happening since Reagan's early years.

But they have a complete disconnect between what they sowed and taking responsibility for what they reaped, pointing to a new boogeyman - Global Warming, among other excuses.
