I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Seen quite a few, ranging from highrise fires (Towering Inferno) to cruise ships turning turtle (Poseidon Adventure) to climate change disaster (Day After Tomorrow) and some real stinkers (10.5 Earthquake, Volcano)

For me, a disaster movies falls apart when something happens that has me reacting Awww, come ON!! That would NEVER happen!! It may be people sharing a passionate kiss while buildings crumble around them, or the entire western half of the USA splitting from the mainland, but too many of those in a movie ... especially at the BEGINNING of a movie ... just turn me cold. Also, the characters have to be mostly sympathetic and the acting has to be decent.

With all that, my two favorite movies were Twister and Dante's Peak. I enjoyed them when I first saw them, and I still enjoy them.

I like Twister because I used to be a fan of violent weather. Where I grew up, we had some amazing storms blow through and the weather was quickly changeable, with a few tornadoes tossed in for good measure. I can see storm chasing as a hobby. There's only one AWWW C'MON!! part of the movie ... fortunately near the end ... and I think they did an amazing job of portraying the power and in a couple of cases the creepiness of a tornado, as well as good character development and ensemble acting. Helen Hunt did an especially fine job.

Dnate's Peak. The film-makers interviewed a number of volcano experts, and - like Twister - managed to minimize the AW C'MON!!! moments of the film. I've always liked Linda Hamilton as an actor, and altho I couldn't imagine her and Pierce Brosnan in film together, they actually managed to mesh their acting styles. The special effects ... you should see the movie just for the special effects alone.

That's cool. I was actually going to say Twister myself, but had to laugh when you talked about "that would never happen!" because of the way they survived it at the end of the flick. My memory is a bit foggy on that now since it's been ages since I saw the movie, but I really liked it back when I was in high school and I've probably seen it 2 or 3 more times over the years.

I remember having a huge crush on Helen Hunt for a while after that. In our English class we had our choice of 3 novels to read for one assignment. I don't' remember the other two, but I choose The Lost World. I'd just seen Twister shortly before that and the entire time I read the book I saw Helen Hunt as Sarah Harding. When the movie came out it was disappointing on many levels, as is always the case when you read the book first, but my biggest disappointment was that she wasn't cast.

I can't really think of another disaster movie I liked, even in a "so bad it's good" kind of way. If you go supernatural, I'd probably choose 28 Days Later or maybe even Independence Day.

If we can go "after the disaster", my pick would be Waterworld. I don't care what anybody says, that movie was amazing for its time and I think still holds up very well today. I think it's funny how negative talk about a movie on the internet seems to influence other people about the movie as well. My brother has made some bad comments about the movie over the years and I always call him on that bullshit and tell him that he loved it too when we saw it as kids.

And this scene is one of the most hilariously awesome in my memory:

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Since this is a pretend Cinema thread in actual RWED Forum, I'd say the best disaster film was likely Primary Colors. Or Wag The Dog. Complete disasters for America.

Wag the Dog was good. I'm sure GWB took inspiration from that one.

Can't remember if I ever saw Primary Colors or not.

Oh, if you want to talk about real disasters, the best real disaster movie, for me, was Hearts and Minds about the Vietnam war. It was compiled from journalists' films of actual events ... often, the ones that were deemed too gory or too harsh for American television, like the time US troops were questioning Viet Cong in a helicopter and tried to induce one into talking by tossing another one out the door. It changed my view of our victims from "statistics" to real people, and I've been anti-war ever since.
