European Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt has said "Lucifer would not welcome" Brexiteers who backed leaving the EU with no plan.

The Belgian MEP made the remarks after European Council president Donald Tusk said he wondered what the "special place in hell" looked like for those who promoted Brexit without a plan for carrying it out safely.

After retweeting Mr Tusk’s statement, Mr Verhofstadt said: “Well, I doubt Lucifer would welcome them, as after what they did to Britain, they would even manage to divide hell.”

Mr Verhofstadt, who previously served as the prime minister of Belgium and is known for his repeated spats with staunch Brexiteer and former Ukip leader Nigel Farage, ended the post with a smiling face emoji.
