How Mike Pence’s Office Meddled in Foreign Aid to Reroute Money to Favored Christian Groups
Officials at USAID warned that favoring Christian groups in Iraq could be unconstitutional and inflame religious tensions. When one colleague lost her job, they said she had been “Penced.”

by Yeganeh Torbati Nov. 6, 5 a.m. EST

Last November, a top Trump appointee at the U.S. Agency for International Development wrote a candid email to colleagues about pressure from the White House to reroute Middle East aid to religious minorities, particularly Christian groups.

“Sometimes this decision will be made for us by the White House (see… Iraq! And, increasingly, Syria),” said Hallam Ferguson, a senior official in USAID’s Middle East bureau, in an email seen by ProPublica. “We need to stay ahead of this curve everywhere lest our interventions be dictated to us.”

The email underscored what had become a stark reality under the Trump White House. Decisions about U.S. aid are often no longer being governed by career professionals applying a rigorous review of applicants and their capabilities. Over the last two years, political pressure, particularly from the office of Vice President Mike Pence, had seeped into aid deliberations and convinced key decision-makers that unless they fell in line, their jobs could be at stake.

As Trump mounts a 2020 reelection effort, he is taking steps to solidify his conservative Christian base, including his decision last week to install his spiritual adviser, Florida televangelist Paula White, in a White House position. Increasing aid to Christians abroad is a core value for his supporters.

America loves a winner!

No reason to deny help to thems that need it just because it comes from Christians.

Non believer here, but honestly, the Christianphobia w/ the Dems is strong.

We shouldn't be giving any money to anybody, given that 35 million Americans don't have healthcare.

But I'd rather be giving it to Christians instead of Muslims if we're going to do it. I don't see the appeal of giving rewards to a diseased and murderous ideology.

Maybe you can explain the draw here, Captain.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Simple: my tax dollars should not be used for ANY religion's benefit. Your point about HC is spot on.

I don't think it's a Dem thing necessarily. Having said that, the so called Christian Right is as corrupt and deceitful as Trump and the GOP. What "Christian" can support such a lying thug and not be a sinner before their God? At the very least an outright hypocrite - they act in direct opposition to their own religion and beliefs.

Well I think we're all kind of in agreement on this one.

Just remember that Pence is the guy that will step in for Trump if somehow the Democrats managed to pull off the impossible and get him out one day.

My very first post in the Countdown thread, which was the 2nd post in that thread, warned that is what would happen and suggested we could welcome the melding of church and state if he were to get in that way.

There is zero chance a guy like Pence would EVER be elected as President.

The only way he'd get in is if Democrats put him in the seat.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

The only thing thats holding the entire GoP and American Christian mess together now iz their eko chamber.

Az long az their faithful bleevrz can be kept from getting any real newz into their feeble brainz, they can stay in biz.

Yeah. Only that's not true.

I know a lot of Republicans that don't go to church.

More fake news.

That's not what Jo posted - try again.

It's getting to the point where most of what you post is not accurate or just, "uh-uh" noise. I'm starting to get the feeling you really don't care one way or the other.

In fact, most of what you or the Banshees post isn't even well thought out opinions, just anti, opposite, negative Troll sewage.

Hey... what do you know. You're right. I think the Nooalf might have thrown me off. I forgot my decoder ring this morning.

That being said, it's still throwing stones in a glass house.

Democrats can't at all make up their mind on any messages because they're trying to court dozens of different bases at once that don't overlap very much if you stripped away the message of "we're not Trump".

One could hardly blame the Establishment for railing on that every single day for three years straight because if the Democrat voters ever had enough time to take a breather and digest all the shit they've been fed, they'd realize that they're not in very friendly company.

I, on the other hand, don't have to work hard at all to avoid the extreme religious right that make me break out in hives when I'm around them too long. They're easy to spot, and they're not very numerous these days either.

Point out something that isn't accurate. You'd be hard pressed to find anything without using opinion pieces or stories that use anonymous sources to back up your argument.

This particular post is not a valid example, since I did re-read the nooalf and realized that I did translate it incorrectly and missed Jo's meaning.

You are right that I don't really care though. The sun still rises regardless of whatever happens. I'm sort of a nihilist by default these days. I've said a thousand times before, and I'm sure I'll have to say it a thousand more times that I'm not a Republican by a long shot. The Democrats, bolstered by a dying Legacy Media, just happen to be far more gross of a group as a whole than the Republicans are in this era of time. I'm sure I'll find myself in the situation of being incorrectly mislabeled a Democrat once or twice more in my life, depending on how long I live.
