Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Horse survives wildfire, sets speed record and then sells for $1.5 million

In December 2017, the Lilac wildfire in southern California tore towards the San Luis Rey Training Center, a facility that holds and trains some of the best racehorses in the US.
Fanned by the wind, the fire spread rapidly and there wasn't time to evacuate all of the horses. The only option was to set them free to run for their lives. One of those who set off through the blaze was Belvoir Bay.
"That was their only chance of surviving the fire. There were hundreds of them and the fires were wild. It was mayhem," the horse's trainer Peter Miller told BBC World Service at the time.
The fire devastated much of the center. Out of the 450 horses that were evacuated or released, 46 died.
Like many of the horses let loose, Belvoir Bay was still unaccounted for days after fleeing the flames.
"It was a living nightmare," an emotional Miller told reporters at Santa Anita. "I thought I lost her."
Eventually, the horse was found in a nearby barn but she wore the scars of her quite remarkable escape.
"It was so hard to identify her," said then-owner and former MGM chief executive Gary Barber. "People were sending us pictures and we were like, 'That doesn't look like her'."
She had suffered severe burns to her legs and was sent to the San Luis Rey Downs Equine Clinic where she spent time in a hyperbaric chamber, a treatment sometimes used on burn victims.
However, after a couple of weeks of treatment, the horse was returned to Barber and so began her incredible racing comeback.
The highlight of her miraculous career came at last weekend's Breeders' Cup, described as the world championships for thoroughbreds, where she stormed to victory in the $1 million Turf Sprint, beating a field of 12 which included two-time champion Stormy Liberal, also trained by Miller.
If victory wasn't enough, she ran a track record -- covering the five furlongs in a stunning 54.83 seconds.
"She's tough as nails. She's just very special to me. That's why it's extra emotional."

I always love a good horse story. Yeah, I know... most horses are just panicky 2000 pound sacks on legs ... when I watch Dr Pol deal with a horse it's almost always because it had injured itself in some fashion ... but they sure are beautiful. And occasionally you find one that's pretty darn cool headed

Barbaro was also such a horse.

Animals like that have bigger souls than some people.

Indeed. I watched a documentary about Barbaro ... how he snapped a front leg running a race, how they tried to save his leg ... and him. How he seemed to understand and calmly accept that they were tryng to help him, and how, in the end, with his head hanging and his awareness focused on pain, they realized that they had the euthanize him.

Animals have beautiful souls. They tell us, without dissembling, how they're feeling. They don't feel "entitled" to more but they live every moment in the moment becuse they can't tell themselves complicted stories about the future and how things "should" be. There was a passage about that in Plague Dogs. I can't find the quote, but it talks about how people believe that "dumb" animals suffer less than humans, but that animals in fact suffer more, because there is no past, no future, no rationalization for them to appeal to ease their own suffering, and how each moment without the benefit of rationalization is like an eternity.

I don't believe that animals are all THAT captured by the moment ... if they were, they could never learn from the past ... but people have a tendency to discount the sufferings of animals just because animals can't make stories of it.

Anyway I digress.

Barbaro was heartbreaking. God rest his animal soul.

But there are many others - not just horses, not just the famous. When you look into them, you see their spirits.

As the song goes - bless the beasts and the children.
