Opioid deaths have been going up because they're now laced with fentanyl, its derivatives (fentanyl(s)), and other drugs. That's one of the things I found out while watching Nightwatch. So I decided to look it up.

Fentanyl(s) are roughly 100X more potent than medical opioids and heroin. They're cheaply manufactured 'overseas', and highly-cut street opioids (also heroin) are boosted with fentanyl(s). But because a small dose is so powerful, overdoing the fentanyl(s)-boost in the opioid(heroin) by even just a little bit can cause many accidental overdoses.

Also, fwiw, there are now so many drugs used to boost opioids, you never know what you're getting. These combo-opioid-mimicking street drugs are more resistant to Narcan, and it requires a far higher Narcan dose to bring people back to the point where they're breathing on their own again.

So while the initial overuse of medical opioids created the addicts, who subsequently turned to street opioids(heroin) when they couldn't get medical opioids anymore, the increased overdose deaths are caused by the adulteration of various street drugs to make them cheaper and get a higher profit.

Increased deaths isn't due to a boost in the number of addicts or an increase in intentional overdoses. It's just due to the fact that sometimes you get a really 'hot' shot.

I think it was you who posted ... somewhere ... about the levels of drug use in the US, and wanted to know what was at fault.

I couldn't find that post, so I'll reply here.

The drugs are at fault.

The US has a high rate of drug use. So maybe one could blame it on too much money, and not enough opportunity leading to dead end jobs. But the Philippines and other impoverished countries like Uruguay also have major drug problems, so one could blame it on too little money and needing to escape a brutal life. Then again Europe in general also has a high rate of drug use. And NZ, and Iceland ... and ...

Leaving alcohol and nicotine aside for now, since their use as drugs is embedded in many cultures, if you look at drugs today, many are EXTREMELY addictive. Your first use could make you an addict.

Also, just as pharmacological information, part of the addictive process is how QUICKLY drug levels rise in your body not necessarily the absolute levels in your bloodstream. (Absolute levels are related to fatality.) So eating a drug - like say MJ brownies - causes a very slow release of drug into your system, and doing that is less likely to cause addiction. Smoking otoh is just like injecting. Since the lungs have an enormous absorptive surface and direct contact with your capillaries, smoking a drug puts a lot of drug very quickly into your veins, just without a needle. The other factor in how quickly drug levels rise is of course drug concentration. Older strains of MJ for example had about 7% cannabinoids by weight, today's strains are roughly 30% - in fact cannabinoids are so concentrated they'll literally crystallize on the outside of the bud.

When it comes to your first dose creating addiction, that's especially true of the opioid class of drugs, including oxycodone. In the US, due to drug mfg lying (it's non addictive!!) many people got and still get hooked on pain prescriptions, but when the scrips run out, or they need a dosage boost to get their high back, they turn to heroin - which is now increasingly being juiced with fentanyl. And fentanyl is so deadly, as little as an equivalent of 2 grains of salt can kill you. In fact, to boost profits, many heroin suppliers cut the heroin with bulk agents then boost the product with fentanyl. And heroin users are dying as a result, since it's so easy to OD on minuscule amounts of fentanyl.

Then there's crack cocaine, a concentrated and volatilized form of the coca leaf. Originally the raw leaf was chewed, to give people energy when working hard at high altitudes without food. But crack cocaine is concentrated, volatilized, and smoked, which of course causes a powerful addictive high.

But most addicts in the Philippines, Malaysia, Afghanistan etc are now addicted to various forms of methamphetamine (and not heroin or opium as might be expected). So, anyway, I'm not going to specifically go into how each new stimulant iteration is more powerful than the last, making them ever more addictive.

But I think if you see drug use avalanching around the globe across many cultures and economies, and you see drugs being made more powerful, more concentrated, and easier to smoke, all the drug use is the drugs' fault.

I think drugs were simply classed for a while in crimes and the addiction and anti-social dangers the drugs pushed on the public, the Class A controlled substances Possession or trafficking of any class. - A misunderstanding that fair negotiations on the one hand and the conduct of the ayatollahs on the other hand constitute a thing and vice versa will lead the US to repeat critical mistakes that brought Ayatollah Khomeini to power in 1979 and led to the signing of the 2015 nuclear deal. At some point, we're just going to have to resign ourselves to Survival of the Fittest.

Part of me thinks the biggest problem with the new wave of drugs is that it doesn't kill people fast enough. I know that sounds evil, but hear me out.

1. Soul-destroying drugs such as these turn these people into drones that would slit their mother's throat for a hit. The longer they live, and the more of them there are, the more of a danger they are to their families and their communities.

2. If people degraded quickly and died so quickly after starting the drugs that it was undeniable to anybody who knew them exactly what killed them, kids would stay the fuck away from these drugs... and even away from low level drugs like weed on the streets that are potentially laced with them too.

Kids are dumb. If you tell a kid not to do something, they're going to do it just to spite you. But if enough people in their lives started dropping like flies quickly because of these new drugs, their sense of self-preservation would kick in and trump the desire to rebel.

I'm drawing from my own experience here. If I knew going into it that cigarette smoking and drinking booze would shorten my life down to only 5 more years or less, I doubt very much I ever would have started either habit when I was a kid. Retirement age seems like forever and a day to a dumb teenager.
