In a matter of months, US consumers made up for twelve years of below-trend retail spending. America’s sclerotic supply chains couldn’t keep up with the surge in demand. The result was the highest inflation rate since 1982.

Now, it seems, consumers are refusing to pay the higher prices. Retail sales adjusted for the Consumer Price Index were about 4% lower in December than in October. The retailers evidently miscalculated, as the unprecedented jump in inventories indicates.

So I guess we don't have a supply chain shortage anymore?

Any thoughts on that? I haven't had any problems buying the very few things I've bought in the last few weeks. They even had my vegetables fully stocked that were out of stock many times in December and early January.

With the average monthly rent in the US up 14% year-on-year, according to the Zillow Index, there are probably another two or three percentage points of CPI increase built into the 2022 data. The shelter component of CPI lags behind changes in the Zillow Index by up to eight months.

As rates rise, moreover, fewer people can afford to buy homes and must rent instead. That keeps upward pressure on rent inflation, and that in turn keeps pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. That doesn’t add up to a US recession in 2022, but it points to rising inflation, economic weakness and a soggy stock market.

I don't miss not having a rent or a mortgage.

As the month wraps up today, I've spent less than $675 in 2022 so far. $230 of that was home improvement with $150 of that being for the kitchen flooring alone.

$360 of it went to heat/electric/water/trash/cable.

The rest went to food.

Zero went to gas for the car.

Zero went to interest.

No real supply problem here in So. Fla., although last week Einstein Bros. Bagels in Weston was all out of salmon spread. I couldn't get my usual shmear on my toasted everything bagel. Just getting over that horror now.

Yeah... It's weird how it's so sporadic.

I was just thinking the last two times I went out for food everything looked pretty stocked.

But when I went to pick up wood putty at Menard's, there was no big tubs of it, and very few smaller (and more expensive) ones.

And they're in the caulk aisle that was almost completely empty. I'd thought about buying some, but the Alex Plus stuff that I use for almost everything was fully stocked on the endcap. It's all the specialty stuff that is sold out. At that price, I'm not buying any of them just to buy them. They don't keep for more than about a year or two after you buy them.
