The less time we spend in the real world, the less of a cost we experience for being detached from it. And you and I must go through pains to remember this all the time.

All models are wrong, but some can be useful. If a model is useful, use it. But the moment it's not, abandon it and move on.

It is certainly not just a leftwing madness thing.

If you've noticed, I've had a few choice words against what the Republicans have been doing recently, and I've never made it a secret how much I loathed GWB and his entire administration.

This isn't so much about politics as it is listening to assholes like Paul Krugman or whatever his right-wing counterpart would be. They're usually wrong about everything because the intellectual models they base all of their thinking on are flawed and/or don't apply at all to the real world. And that's all before you even consider the ideological biases behind their models and how they interpret them.

In the Paul Krugman example, the reason why nobody listens to him is because everything he has said and every prediction he has made in the last 8 years have turned out not to be true because he's been ideologically captured and he's purposefully ignoring data to keep his model working in his brain, even though it's obvious to everybody living in the real world that nothing he is saying is true or ever comes true.

He's right about propaganda and the 'accurate data' and This vid btw is a massive over-simplification
and yes he has a lot of good points, the cherry picking data with 'blue zones' data and a new agenda or book to sell.
but What if I told you fail came from within the US government both Left and Right were supporting the cruel mass murder politics and mountains of skulls in Cambodia

a Big Big Chunk of the issue was Western meddling in Vietnam S.E.Asia big powers messing around in Hindu India, war in Myanmar Burma and drawing new lines in new maps with new names and pushing new political treaties that did not previously exist, a lot of people didn't understand the Vietnamese it just boiled down to rightwing vs leftwing in the midwit minds, they would let the Vietnamese vote the way they wanted Rightwing Western National or Leftwing Marxist Socialist, both sides ready to bomb and spread influence

For over 1000 years Vietnamese fought invader after invader, Vietnam was fighting Hindu Myanmar Buddha Thai Indians a bunch of other ancient people, the European Royals also wanted Asia the Vietnamese fighting them, Vietnam fought the Chinese dynasty, Vietnam people were one of the first to defeat Genghis Khan who took most of the world but the Vietnamese resisted him, they fought with the Dali Kingdom from China, they fought with the Khmer Empire Champa, the Vietnamese fought the Lao Burmese and the Siamese, they fought with British Mercs and Merchants the Dutch East India Company, French mercenaries, the French Empire, the Japanese, the French again, by the time the USA had come along this country had its entire existence rebellion and resisting and fighting off other invader peoples...and was probably dragged into the Vietnam war by lies and the French

and btw United States both Nixon and left and right the Reagan and Carter both had support for the Khmer Rouge, after the Vietnam war it was found it is very possible U.S. directly funded and armed the Khmer Rouge in order to weaken the influence of Vietnam, the Vietnamese who just defeated the USA in an endless land war, in fact there is evidence of Western support for Khmer Rouge-dominated CGDK held Cambodia's UN seat until 1993, in 1980 Brzezinski...yup Mika Monring Joe that old daddy Brzezinski that toxic war mongering Brezinski said that 'I encouraged the Chinese to support Pol Pot. I encouraged the Thai to help the Khmer Rouge.' So it seems a lot of stuff was also done by 2nd party nations or third party that made an attempt that avoided any direct involvement

So yes the dude was a moron going to Cambodia but maybe something else was going on that allowed Cambodia to be so cruel and bad, he still had supporters, a cult resistance faction, wanted to keep fighting in a jungle like a kamikaze, he wanted to build up resistance in villages, even then Western people wanted to see it all, take the tourism trip get the story and he ordered the execution of a Briton, a Frenchman, and an Australian who had been captured in a Khmer Rouge attack on a train. Before his death in 1997 he proclaimed that "when I die, my only wish is that Cambodia remain Cambodia and belong to the West. It is over for communism, and I want to stress that." In July 1996, a mutiny broke out among the Khmer Rouge and in August it was announced that others were breaking away from the movement, taking troops loyal to them then put under house arrest 1998, Pol Pot a cruel man who killed millions like Hitler and Stalin simply died in his sleep of a heart attack.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

IMHO people who cling to highly developed and rarefied models in the face of contradictory real world observation aren't "intellectuals". They're IDEALOGUES.

Again, IMHO, REAL intellectuals develop and refine models BASED ON REAL WORLD OBSERVATION. The heros of the intellectual world are people like Leeuwenhoek (who discovered microbes), Newton, Einstein, Curie, Darwin, Adam Smith, Marx, Watson and Crick, Elaine Morgan, Alfred Wegener, and many others, who looked at the world in a whole new way and saw what we failed to see, even if it was right in front of our eyes.
