Trying to get folks here to meet up, even to go to a firing range?

Lol

You might have an easier time herding cats.....

But it would be nice if it could happen.

I'm an optimist like that.

Mercy is the mark of a great man.
Guess I'm just a good man.
Well, I'm alright.

It may be pigeons as well... and interesting article here:

http://www.affs.org/html/biomagnetism.html

excerpt:

"The discovery of a biogenic material (that is, one formed by a biological organism) with ferromagnetic properties and found to be magnetite was the first breakthrough toward an understanding as to why some animals have the ability to detect the earth's magnetic field. Searches for biogenic magnetite in human tissues had not been conclusive until the beginning of the 1990's when work with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction on human brain tissue extracts of the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and meninges (membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) identified magnetite-maghemite crystals. Thanks for this. This opens a whole new outside the box line for me. I was still thinking in terms of projectiles, but actually, there are a lot of other weapon ideas. If you could disable an opponent for 30 seconds, that in combination with a tranq would make a more effective defense than a gun.

You could star much simpler, a blinding flash of light, something hypnotic, some sort of sound wave. All sorts of ideas.

I notice in this discussion that there is a fair amount of gun fetishism, it's like the D&D crowd who would like there to be sword fights in sci-fi, or while riding through the jungle of unbelievable ants...

All of those are already in use, or deep into development. There's a show on called "FutureWeapons" where they deal with just such stuff, and in a hands-on, not theoretical, way.

Because meanwhile, in the real world, that's all most of us can afford to have available to us. There ARE weapons-grade LEDs and sound-wave devices, but you can't afford them, they aren't man-portable, and/or you aren't allowed anywhere near them, unless you're to be on the receiving end of the pain beam (look that one up when you get a chance, too - it's a microwave that "cooks" your outer few layers of skin, which leaves you mostly unharmed - allegedly - but is excrutiatingly painful until you step out of the beam).

So for most of us, a good old gun is what we have and what we have access to. For anyone who thinks it's not enough in the face of all this high-tech gadgetry, though, I'd still point to the Khyber Pass, where "primitives" with rifles are still holding their own against all outsiders, some 30 years and more after the Russians tried to teach them what modern warfare was all about, and half a dozen years since we went in to make sure they really got the message. They're still there, and we still haven't beaten them. Why is that, if all they have are simple guns and a few RPGs and IEDs?

Mike

Mike- You and I may have different views on a lot of things, but I'm right with you on this one.

Another thing to remember is that most of those weapons are designed for crowd disperal/riot control or area denial. Not for pinpoint use against a single/small number of assailants.

Re: Khyber Pass. Those fellas also seem to have a knack for producing backyard knockoffs of just about any weapon in existence ithout the use of high-tech machinery. Something to think about when you look at schematics of very simple open-bolt SMGs.

I saw the pain beam one fwiw - pain is such a great deterrent. If it could be focused on the "nut region" there'd be no more war.
