I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

WHile I was sitting quietly on this Sunday morning, I felt the slight double-dip P-waves that pressage an earthquake. Five seconds later (a looooong time for an earthquake) the house did the S-wave rhumba. It bumped and swayed rather gently for at least fifteen seconds, which means it was a moderate earthquake a long distance away. And indeed, here it is...

Of course, this ain't nothin' compared to the Northridge quake, the Landers quake, and my all-time favorite- the Whittier quake, where my workplace was no more than 1/8 mi from the epicenter. So...

While I was living in Berkeley (the first week I think) there was a quake. It was kind of like someone was kicking the side of the building and the waves traversed through. Lasted < 10 secs (I think).

My thoughts:
What the hell is going on?
Earth quake, it must be an earth quake.
What do I do?
Go to the door, get in the door frame.
Oh... it's over.
*continues watching tv*

Given that I lived on the prairies for my entire life (the ground stays still where I live) it was rather weird have the ground actually move!

I felt it!! It was cool. I was half asleep and I looked at the clock and it was 8:40 or 41 and I heard a faint rumbling and then a lil shake. I thought "Eh, its a small earthquke. Big deal." Then I heard a louder rumbling and felt an even harder shake.It lasted for like a few secs. After that I got up out of bed and went to open the door and at the same time me, my sis and her two kids came out of the rooms and came together in the hallway, just talking over to each other, all excited bout what just happened. I just thought it was cool.

I remember that really big quake in '89 over in, I think San Francisco or Marin I can't remember. I was 3 and I lived in San Jose. That quake sacred the

outta me. I wouldn't let go of my father pant leg for that whole day.

Ahh, the joys of living in SoCal. I live in eastern LA county, so I didn't feel this one, but there've been plenty of others. The Northridge quake was the most memorable, since the P-waves woke me up just before the real rocking and rolling. As a life-long Californian (though I grew up in the north, not a native Angeleno), being able to appreciate seeing the walls move is just part of the Golden State experience. My friends from other parts of the country have often asked me how I can stand to live with the risk. I tell them (some of them, anyway) "hell, you live where tornadoes happen several times a year, SoCal is safe in comparison"! Earthquakes are pretty exciting - as long as it's not your house that's falling down........... (Although I must say that some of my pets would probably beg to differ).

Lessee,
Blizzards, '78 in Massachusetts and '79 in Chicago. Snowed in for a week in '78 and 3 days in '79.

New England ice storms, Most every winter. Losing power in the dead of winter. There's a reason why gas heat with steam radiators is the ultimate cold weather heating system. You still have heat when the power goes out.

Hurricanes, Everything from mild to wild. Single day heavy rain types to Fran in North Carolina that left me without power for 8 days and a mountain of wood mulch near the airport big enough to ski down, assuming snow would stick to a big steaming compost pile.

Tornadoes, Bad mojo on a very personal scale. It is possible for a dinner fork to be pushed through your windshield, dull end first.

Flooding, Lady, I told you your Miata wouldn't ford that water on the road and no, I'm not putting my Jeep in there to get your car out.

Heat wave, Officially in the hottest place in the nation at 106 degrees F. one year. Not so bad if it wasn't Philly!

Cold wave, -80 degrees F. windchill in Chicago. 2 winter coats, boots, wool socks, gloves, hat and hood, ran 1/2 block and frozen stiff when I got to work. The only time I wore a sweatshirt near a pizza oven and I was still cold.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

In the US where buildings do not usually collapse pancake style, most injuries from earthquakes are from falling debris, broken glass (windows, TV, dishes) and falling while trying to escape. US disaster agencies and ARC recommend people in the US to "Drop, cover, and hang-on" - they also do not recommend getting in the door jam as many folks are injured while getting to the door way or while they are in the door way (flying debris or swinging doors resulting in concussion, broken knuckles, and other cuts and bumps).

In other countries where building codes are less stringent (or completely lacking), make sure you absolutely *do not* get under anything (you will most likely be crushed) - the best recommendation is to curl up into a fetal position next to some structure that might offer you an air pocket/void when it is compressed during a total building collapse - and hang-on.

Yes indeed, another interesting bump (though in the afternoon, rather than the night). I'd guess that it lasted less than 5 seconds. It felt like just a single shock wave that ran through my living room (I'm about 20 miles due west of the epicenter). It was a pretty good bump though, and it freaked out my parrot (my cat just kept sleeping.......).

Not a disaster, but some more So Cal 'issues'.

Just found out there were two dead crows in the next door neighbor's yard that tested postive for West Nile virus. County health believes the mosquitos are breeding close-by.

Last month a public health alert was issued for San Bernardino county for Hanta virus, though they did either not strain-type it or didn't mention which strain it was. The Sin Nombre strain, originally found in the four corners area but expanding rapidly, has a mortality rate of 80%
