I think it's only realistic to understand that we are not perfect and our natural tendency is to behave selfishly most of the time.
I think I'm better person for realizing that. It's so easy for a human being to think too much of themselves.
I don't think it's good to teach kids that they're only good. Both sides should be presented for them.
People aren't either good or bad, though the bad side is easier. (almost sounds like I'm talking about the Force..

..)

Well, at least I think I'm good for realising that I ain't a saint.

(and not even a guy, for that matter)

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The problem HK is that we're SOOO good that we're also way too modest. So, am I a good person? You know what...? Hell yeah, I am. Sometimes I've even been heroic. Like the one year my daughter was regressing into dementia, my MIL was dying of cancer in our house and my SO had been dx w/ cancer at the same time. THAT was a year I hope never to relive... but I carried them all. That's my story... and we ALL have them.

So- what's YOUR story???

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

And when I last left this thread the one thing that was on my mind was that that leetle issue of drinking before noon - alone - had been solved.

I personally have not been so heroic. But I have met those who have been. Some carry unspeakable burdens alone and unacknowledged. SignyM, you sound like you are one of them. Some act with courage and hope when cowardice would be easier. That would be you, HK. Others live by their beliefs in a hard-knock world. You know who you are. My hat's off to all of you and the many others whose story has yet to be told.

My only slightly heroic moment was some years back when I was driving a delivery van for a computer company. I was on the BQE (big road near Manhattan for non- NYers) going north when I saw a guy in a Lincoln harassing a girl in a little Toyota; hitting his brakes in front of her, making like he was gonna drive her off the road and such. It was about 3pm, just before rush hour, and the road was relativly open. I drove up next to him, smiled, and hit the gas. The punk took the bait, and sped up after me. When we were clear of the girl's car, I moved in front of him, and jammed on my brakes, then hit the gas again before he hit my rear. He was not pleased, and was in persuit. Being a seasoned, professional driver, it wasn't too hard to keep him from passing me, and I thought a police car might see us (that woulda been so cool) but no such luck. My exit was coming up fast, so I pulled to the left lane, and as he started to move left, I cut across to the right, right in front of him, and sailed onto my exit to the LIE (big road into Long Island). He had no chance to follow.

Oh well, at least I saved one girl some trouble from an

hole.

Not exactly thrilling heroics, but what the hey.

SargeX is following a passion.
My sister did a mid-career change and has been working free-lance for the past five years (not by choice) and will moving to care of mom.
My co-worker took in an 18-year-old who had been kicked out by her mom.
Chris- that's more heroics than I'd want to manage!

I know people like HK said- every day heroes doing union negotiations like Rue, volunteering for soup kitchens, ferrying voters, busting their *sses every day keeping their families, neighborhoods and co-workers together. When I saw the question "Are you a good person" I thought about the people I know on this board and on my other home away from home and I thought- yeah, of course.

Yeah, real heroes do things that wouldn't make exciting tv shows and movies.
They change and/or improve people's lives.

Every one of us can be real life heroes when we don't pay back for the injustice we received in a form or another. Forgiving is more heroic than revenge. Unless, of course, you're dealing with guys who don't have the slightest understanding of the word....and determining that is not so easy sometimes.

We need more mutual understanding.
