An arbitrary term, signifying nothing. Mal himself is a moral relativist, as am I. Lose everything, and a wonderful epiphany happens.

You stop living by other people's arbitrary ideas. It's one of the things I love about this show.

"Good person" can mean anything from "doormat" to "relatively gentle sociopath".

It's not important how you score on a test that another human being thought up.

It's important how you approve of yourself in your own mind.

AND-that Amazon.com doesn't leave any discs out of the Firefly box set. I had to send mine back and WAIT...

Not sure I would agree with that... I mean Hitler thought he was doing right... Osama Bin Laden probably thinks he's so just and good that he's Gods right hand...

Q: What do you have when you are holding two little green balls in your hand.
A: Kermit's undivided attention.

Judging yourself only by what you think can make you a Hitler; judging yourself only by what others think can make you a Cordellia.

An old saying....Chrisisall

Nice sentiment, I'm sure Hitler would agree.

Anyway, there I was with the Timken High School Girls Varisty Swim team, the Cheerleading Squad, the JV Girls Field Hockey Team, the Varsity Softball team...

65 Girls At Area School Pregnant

There are 490 female students at Timken High School, and 65 are pregnant, according to a recent report in the Canton Repository.

The article reported that some would say that movies, TV, videogames, lazy parents and lax discipline may all be to blame.

School officials are not sure what has contributed to so many pregnancies, but in response to them, the school is launching a three-prong educational program to address pregnancy, prevention and parenting.

The newspaper also reported that students will face mounting tensions created by unplanned child-rearing responsibilities, causing students to quit school and plan for a GED. This will make it difficult for the Canton City School District to shake its academic watch designation by the state.

According to the Canton Health Department, statistics through July show that 104 of the 586 babies born to Canton residents in Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center had mothers between 11 and 19.

The newspaper reports that the non-Canton rate was 7 percent. Canton was 15 percent.

A good time was had by all, does that make me a bad, bad man?

Anybody notice the line about the school not knowing how these girls got pregnant or the one mentioning the "three pronged" program...

Congress would never have approved such a thing.

Tired of the Anti-U.S. sentiment around here Chrisisall

The idea that drawing on natural moral instinct as opposed to simply complying with social norms automatically would make us all into murdering sociopaths belies a very interesting assumption:

That without adherence to an arbitrary idea of "goodness", we would all become reevers.

This follows, to some degree, Freud's idea of the subconsious being a kind of dangerous, evil-brewing dumping ground for the psyche.

John O'Donohue, philospher, scholar, and poet, has argued:

"...demons do not account for all of the subconsious. The primal energy of our soul holds a wonderful warmth and welcome for us,"

I contend that when we have a profound self-love and self-trust, we treat other humans with the same reverence. Serial killers are miserable people; but by and large they have mastered the outward appearance of "goodness".

Hitler followed social norms with great care. He did everything a "good" person would do. He was a vegetarian, artist and a patriot, and told people exactly what they wanted to hear. His adherence to "goodness" put him in a very advantageous position. There are countless examples of this same type of manipulation; Ted Bundy was a charming politician, and John Wayne Gacey worked part time as a clown.

Mal, outside of moral code, outside of conventional approval, has moral grammar intact. And I think Mal is not extraordinary. Ordinary people do extraordinarily compassionate, heroic things every day.

It just doesn't make the news.
