Keep the Shiny side up

Remember all those horrible stories of murders, baby raping, and general lawlessness at the Superdome and Convention Center? Seems "stories" is an accurate description. Nice to know folk aren't as degenerate as the N.O. mayor and police chief reported.

Some Reports of N.O. Violence Exaggerated

By MICHELLE ROBERTS
Associated Press Writer

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - On Sept. 1, with desperate Hurricane Katrina evacuees crammed into the convention center, Police Chief Eddie Compass reported: "We have individuals who are getting raped; we have individuals who are getting beaten."

Five days later, he told Oprah Winfrey that babies were being raped. On the same show, Mayor Ray Nagin warned: "They have people standing out there, have been in that frickin' Superdome for five days watching dead bodies, watching hooligans killing people, raping people."

The ugliest reports _ children with slit throats, women dragged off and raped, corpses piling up in the basement _ soon became a searing image of post-Katrina New Orleans.

The stories were told by residents trapped inside the Superdome and convention center and were repeated by public officials. Many news organizations, including The Associated Press, carried the witness accounts and official pronouncements, and in some cases later repeated the claims as fact, without attribution.

But now, a month after the chaos subsided, police are re-examining the reports and finding that many of them have little or no basis in fact.

They have no official reports of rape and no eyewitnesses to sexual assault. The state Department of Health and Hospitals counted 10 dead at the Superdome and four at the convention center. Only two of those are believed to have been murdered.

Gee, on one hand Mr. Brown, former FEMA head, is being crucified for failing to acknowledge media reports during his handling of the crisis, on the other hand those reports were uniformly false and misleading. Maybe he doesn't deserve as much blame as he's getting.

I remember the Mayor and police chief talking about the thousands of bodies. Hundreds in the Superdome. Rapes, violence. Heck, the one dude was on Opera a week later talking about the raping, violence, and stacks of bodies in the Superdome. Perhaps he wanted to deflect the question of why he didn't use the buses and trains to get people out. Perhaps.

This is from NYMag's review of Serenity:

At bottom, what first Firefly and now Serenity are about is the way people in power shape our collective memories to maintain control: “One task of writing history is hiding the truth,” says Mal in one of his more eloquent moments.
I wonder what happened to all these early eyewitness reports.

Yup,

***Venting mode on****

I heare ya. It's amazing how big the media frenzy was hum? Does'nt seem as frenzied now that someone blew the whistle on the BS.

The media loves to report rape, pillaging, and plundering but not their own mistakes. No problems with reporting heresay, innuendo, and rumor without checking to see if it's in any way true. Cause, see, if you report the BS and sensationalize it, it's so much more satisfying when you lay it on the current administrations doorstep (while ignoring the state governments doorstep).

yes, I'm a bit peeved at the media and it's lack of integrity.

Oh for the days of Ed Murrow, and real news.

***Venting mode off***

Whew, I feel better now.......

Am I a Lion?... No, I think I'ma tellin' the truth.
