To Dayve: Yes, I agree that Bell isn't a strong candidate. I had hoped that John Sharp would run, but he's had too many close defeats to want to run again. Bell's only chance is for Strayhorn to run a strong race and divide the Republican vote.

Bush, or shrub as I like to call him, probably would not have run for reelection as Governor if Gore had made it to the White House in 2000 so we all would be rid of him by now. I stayed up all night on election night 2000 and drank heavily during and after the recount. In fact that recount set off the heaviest period of drinking of my life. I was depressed until spring 2001. It's amazing to me that Bush is still around, I'm just grateful that his time in office is running out. My hope is that he doesn't do any additional damage while he's in office, but that is hoping for way to much.

That depression was hard to shake for me, too. At first, in 2000, I was kind of glad that Shrub, (gotta love Molly Ivins), was leaving the state, but after all the harm he has done to this country, I'm sorry we let him get as far as he did. Power and money...money and power - it's an old story. I really hate what has happened to Texas politically. I've lived here my whole life and have never felt so bad about being a Texan as I have these last 5 years....I thought of moving, but I own land here that has been in my family for five generations and I hate to give that up.

I thought about moving too, and I'm still thinking about it, but all of my family and friends are here so moving to another part of the country would be difficult for me. I don't own property so that part wouldn't be a problem. I look at it this way, demographically the Republicans are screwed in Texas. They have about six to eight years left as the dominant party before the Hispanic growth makes them a permanent minority party as they were from Reconstruction into the 1990's. The difference will be that this time the Democrats in office will be real Democrats and not a bunch of Republicans running as Democrats as they had to prior to the 90's. BTW, call me Brian. I joined as DallasFirefly because it looked like everyone had a Firefly based username.

Ok, thanks Brian.. I'm Dave without the Y...
And you make a good point about the Hispanic population increase in coming years, but I wonder if they will remain aligned with the Democrats as they have done in the past, or fall for the Republican religion card... i've seen some conversions already.
I'm sort of out here in the sticks.. about half way between Houston & Dallas... and it's pretty red. I can count the number of liberal friends in the area on one hand... so, when i thought about moving...i was thinking aboot Vancouver.

Vancouver is a great looking city. Canadians are refreshingly liberal for the most part, despite the recent election there. The Mexican American population in Texas votes about 65%-35% Democrat-Republican in typical elections. That margin has held for decades, so the newer voters will likely follow the same pattern. Religious conservatism is why most of the 35% vote Republican, but the rest realize that it isn't in their interest to vote republican. So there is hope for the future in Texas, but we'll have to wait till the next decade for that future to begin.
