Perhaps half of humanity lives in Southern and Eastern Asia, so it has usually been the centre of the world economy.

As Wolfensohn said, the last century or so has been something of a blip.

It would not be astonishing if the world returned to normal over the next 50 years or so, let alone the next 500!

Thats a bit oversimplified. Without the West all the East has is some tasty spices and trinkets. The West gives value to that which comes from the East. The West has always been the center of the world economy. Now the center of the local asian economy has been what? Machuria maybe. But the world as a whole has always looked further West. Right now the center of the world's economy is a spot 11 miles northeast of the Topeka High School cafateria in Topeka, Kansas. I think it's a Denny's, but it could be the used car dealer next door (the world economy is always in flux).

Until 1800 or so, the average income was only slightly above subsistance level everywhere on Earth. There were more people in China and India than Europe or America, and about equally wealthy, so they were more important to the world economy. That is a simplification, but that is necessary in a post a few lines long.

There is no law of nature that says that people in the West must be richer than those in the East, only different goverment policies over the last 200 years.

The question is: how wisely will their goverments act in the future?
