Hello,

I was watching a show called B.S. today on cable, which features Penn and Teller, the entertainer/magicians who love to debunk everything. Their shows typically involve some good points and some questionable arguments as they try to debunk various beliefs.

On this show, the pair said that Al Gore offsets his 'carbon signature' by purchasing 'carbon credits.' These credits are ostensibly used to purchase 'green' initiatives like tree-planting and renewable research, etc.

They also said that he owns the company that sells him (and others) these 'carbon credits.'

Is this true, and if so, does it bother anyone else?

So riddle me this - what's the White House's electric bill? What's the fuel bill on Air Force One, or the Presidential motorcade?

You're going to point out that you can't compare Bush's carbon footprint to a "normal" human being's, but I'd make the same claim about Gore - you're talking about ALL of his energy usage, not just his personal use. Yes, he has a large house - it's also the headquarters for SEVERAL different groups that he runs.

When Bush goes on one of his thousands of vacation days, does he take the motorcade? Does he use Air Force One? Couldn't he drive himself and fly coach? After all, he's been trying to pass himself off as one of us for years - how come he's too good to travel like normal folk?

But Mr. Gore is the prophet of Manmade Global Warming and wants us all to create a bunch less carbon, regardless of the sacrifice. Shouldn't he set a good example?

Hello,

This is a Sound mission Statement:

"We should strive to be good to our fellow man. Help him when we're able. We should try to avoid becoming overcome with rage, greed, or jealousy."

This is a potentially true but alarmist expansion of the Sound mission Statement:

Failure to observe these good behaviors may create a situation of increased stress and tension in the world: A human pressure-cooker of indecency whose thoughtlessness threatens to reach critical levels that may lead to depression and violence."

This is where a Sound mission Statement gets fully corrupted:

"When you fail to follow these good behaviors, it creates a 'Sin Footprint.' On order to overcome the negative impact of your 'Sin Footprint' from the world, you should purchase 'Sin Offsets' or 'Indulgences' from the Church. You can trust that the Church will use these 'Sin Offsets' to support clergy who will pray for your soul, so that your Sin is Forgiven and you need not feel Guilty."

Since its' the rare right-winger who looks up the facts before throwing stones, here are the facts on Al Gore's home:

Al Gore bought the place in 2002. He uses it for formal events (it even has a commercial kitchen) as well as for office space for several organizations. Over the years, he's been making improvements, but one of the improvements (solar panels) was stalled in the local permits department.
Quote:

Zoning rules in Al Gore's upscale neighborhood kept the former vice president and environmental activist from installing solar panels on his roof. Gore bought his multimillion dollar home in 2002 in Belle Meade, an exclusive city encircled by metropolitan Nashville, and he has been ramping up an ambitious renovation ever since. But his contractors ran into a legal barrier last summer when they sought to apply for a permit to install solar panels on the roof. Terry Franklin, Belle Meade's building officer, said the town only allows power generating equipment to be placed on the ground level. "Solar panels are generators," Franklin said. "We told them they couldn't do it," he said. "They wanted to try anyway, but we convinced them it was something the board wouldn't allow".
www.usatoday.com/weather/climate/globalwarming/2007-03-20-gore-solar_N
.htm

He has since installed solar panels, a rainwater-collection system and geothermal heating. In addition, he's replaced all of his light with fluorescents and LEDs and made other energy-conservation choices.
Quote:

"Short of tearing it down and staring anew, I don't know how it could have been rated any higher," said Kim Shinn of the U.S. Green Building Council, which gave the house its second-highest rating for sustainable design. Gore's improvements cut the home's summer electrical consumption by 11 percent compared with a year ago, according to utility records reviewed by The Associated Press. Most Nashville homes used 20 percent to 30 percent more electricity during the same period because of a record heat wave. Shinn said Gore's renovations are impressive because his home, which is more than 80 years old, had to meet the same rigorous standards as new construction. "One of the things that is tremendously powerful about what the Gores have done is demonstrate that you can take a home that was a dog, an absolute energy pig, and do things to correct that," Shinn said.
Because of the size of his home, his monthly electrical bills are still higher than average, but well below what an equivalently-sized home would use. He offsets the remainder of his electrical usage with clean energy.

Due to zoning and building codes, Al Gore has been slightly delayed in installing solar panels to make his home/ office building energy independent. However, I understand that as of 8 months ago he finally got clearance from the code engineers and is installing solar panels apace.

Speaking of fuel bills...

Look up the fuel cost* of a goddamn aircraft carrier, a useless relic from a bygone era that's nothing more than a sitting duck popup target in 4GW and above...

http://www.johntreed.com/sittingducks.html

"Closer to home, Iran has honed a swarming tactic, in which small and lightly armed speedboats come at far larger warships from different directions. A classified Pentagon war game in 2002 simulated just such an attack and in it the Navy lost 16 major warships, according to a report in The New York Times last January.

"The sheer numbers involved overloaded their ability, both mentally and electronically, to handle the attack," Lt. Gen. K. Van Riper, a retired Marine Corps officer who commanded the swarming force, told the Times. "The whole thing was over in five, maybe 10 minutes."

http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0620/p07s04-wome.html?page=2

And explain to me, given how much of our infrastructure we could finally fix with that money, WHY we still field the stupid things ?

And that's just the FUEL bill, not even counting personnel, operations and maintainence, and air units costs...

They've NO role in defending our country, NONE, only as a weapon of aggression, and a pathetic, useless, outdated one at that, only even marginally useful against an already defeated opponent, and even then all too vulnerable to swarming by armed *civilian* speedboats.

Anvilicious rant there aside...

If you wanna talk about Fuel Bills, start with the fucking military, and get back with me when you have some kind of logical answer for why we're willing to waste so MUCH fuel on a lost cause nobody in their right mind wanted in the first place, yet have the nerve to bitch that blowing the crap out of one of the countries it comes from has shortened our supply ?

Answer me THAT, willya.

America loves a winner!

The problem isn't w/ capitalism, but when Governments get into the game and start mandating the selling and buying of there "credits." This exact sort of thing is being proposed for the buying and selling of houses. If a person buys a plot of land, but wants to build a much larger house on the plot of land than the houses which surrounds it, then the individual will either have to build a smaller house, or buy square footage from those home owners, or possibly the Government.

Whozit: Calling Gore a snake-oil salesman only works if he's selling snake oil. But what if everything that Al Gore is saying is... the truth? Your name-calling kinda falls apart then, doesn't it? Before name-calling gets any traction around here you actually have to refute the point under discussion. Otherwise we'll all just call "bullshit" 'cause we all recognize a hollow ad hominem when we hear one.

There are scientists who do not belive in "Man made" global warming, but they're ignored by the press, as for the Edwards scandal. This is proof that the press thinks they can decide what is big news and what is'nt. But the vast majority of scientists think otherwise. And as far as I can tell, the arguments against global warming have been pretty thoroughly disproven, scientifically. So if you're admittedly not an expert, why would you chose to rely on one set of "expert" opinions... and a minority set at that... over another set of "expert" opnions?

AFA Edwards... the story was broken, I think, by the National Enquirer, which also broke the story about the mink coat that came to life, bit it's owner to death, and ran off. Gonna let than one percolate for a while before I form an opinion. But if your view of individuals is based on their sexual escapades, do you care that Newt Gingrich divorced his first wife, Jackie Battley, while she was undergoing cancer treatment? Apparently raked her over the coals financially while she was in a weakened state and too sick to fight bakc. And while how do you feel about Karl Rove and Haggard being closeted gays? Or Mark Foley soliciting teenage boys? Or John David Roy Atchison, Republican prosecutor, being arrested for soliciting sex from a 5-year old girl? (He killed himself later). Or Loius Beres, chair of the Christian Coalition, who molested three pre-teen family members? www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/Republican_Sex_Scandals

Plenty of sex scandals to go around, even by people who claim to be guardians of our morality.

Anyway, gotta get to work and do something productive. TTUL

Adultery is no longer a crime? And isn't Edwards from that Carolina state where they passed that specific law against "theft of companionship" or somesuch, effectively allowing both criminal and civil prosecution of the mistress as well as the adulterer?
Or are we only using selective laws as approved by Rue?

Is lying to Congress still a crime? Is torture still a war crime? Apparently we only use selective laws as approved by Bushie.

Oh puhleeeeeze, EVERYTHING in America's a crime- quite literally.
Tying your shoe in Manhattan becomes 'pedestrian flow disruption'; sneezing in public is 'irresponsible germ dispersal'.
In fact, YOUR POST is causing me emotional DISTRESS!!! If I have a heart attack YOU'LL be hearing from my new lawyer, pal!!!

JSF: Do you REALLY want to go down that road? Do we want to start prosecuting EVERY adulterer, every single person in Congress who has an indiscretion - or an ALLEGED indiscretion? Let's start with Larry Craig. See ya, pallie - by the way, you SAID you were resigning; why are you still here? Anyway, it's prosecution time. And impeachment time - doesn't adultery qualify as a high crime or misdemeanor?

Next up, David Vitter. Then Newt Gingrich, who admitted to having an affair while his wife was in the hospital, deathly ill. But he was nice enough to wait until Mother's Day to file for divorce. Explains why they call him "Newt" - slimy, bottomfeeding, scum-sucking... yup, it fits.

How about John McCain, who admitted to having an improper relationship with his current wife while still married to his previous "starter wife" (Anyone notice how it's always the "family values" candidates who seem to be on their second, third, or ninth marriages? Apparently divorce is the ULTIMATE family value...). Or how about John McCain AGAIN, for having what was described as "an improper relationship" with a female lobbyist, a relationship which his own handlers had to ORDER him to end in order to avoid scandal and conflict of interest charges, due to an adulterous affair WITH A LOBBYIST. Talk about sleeping with the enemy!

How far do you want to take this? Or did your plan to prosecute adultery pretty much begin and end at John Edwards' doorstep?

Just wondering is all...

Also, Whozit, and completely as an aside...

How do you KNOW that Edwards' wife isn't fine with the whole arrangement? How do you KNOW she didn't set it up herself? Stranger things have happened! She's sick. She's dying. Chances are, she's really not able to give her husband much sexual satisfaction. That doesn't mean she doesn't want him to have some release.

I'm not saying that's the case, only pointing out that you don't really KNOW anything about the "facts" that you're trying to sell here.

Think it over is all.
