Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I haven't seen much here on the war between Russia and Georgia. This morning, the president of the U.S. announced that we are mobilizing our military to vigorously deliver aid to Georgia, and that we stand by Georgia.

What are your feelings on this, and what might this portend? Are the dying embers of the cold war about to be rekindled?

I feel that there was a LOT of propaganda and deliberate misinformation in this war, from both sides, and that the MSM was suckered into reporting that instead of the facts. And although I can see why it's probably Russia who's mostly to blame for over-reacting to whatever it is that Georgia did to provoke it, I'm going to wait a bit and see if the murky picture of the lead-up to this war will become clearer in the next few days.

I don't think this is the start of another Cold War, Russia's an important trading partner for Europe and many other countries, and its oil and other natural resources are far too precious. But it seems like the post-USSR Russia is in the middle of its toddler-phase as a nation, trying to provoke the authority figures of the world in order to establish how far it can go before it suffers serious consequences. Somebody needs to give it a good spanking (in a diplomatic sense).

Anthony:

See the thread entitled "Defense against ethnic cleansing, or invasion?" for more info.

Some sources are saying that Georgia was engaging in "ethnic cleansing" in the South Ossetia region, and had already killed more than 1600. Other sources say there was no provocation or reason for Russia to intervene at all. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

Because of Georgia's improving relations with the US and NATO, they may have been emboldened to do things they really shouldn't have done, thinking that we'd have their back. We don't - not because we don't want to, but because we CAN'T. We're stretched beyond the breaking point militarily,we don't have the spare cash to throw at them, and we don't really want to get into either a pissing match or a shooting war with Russia right about now - a fact that has not been lost on the Russians, which is a big part of why they went in when and how they did. They learned that from the Israelis, who are used to being pushed and provoked, and when they strike back, they hit HARD and fast, overrun enemy territory, keep driving into their lands, and then, when the international community convinces them to stop, they give back a little bit of that land and keep a lot of it.

Its far more likely they learned it from the "Brezhnev Doctrine" which I'm sure our friends in the Czech Republic can tell you about.
