CROWN POINT, Indiana (CNN) -- More than 2,000 voter registration forms filed in northern Indiana's Lake County by a liberal activist group this week have turned out to be bogus, election officials said Thursday.

An official enters the Las Vegas, Nevada, ACORN office, which is under investigation for alleged voter fraud.

The group -- the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN -- already faces allegations of filing fraudulent voter registrations in Nevada and faces investigations in other states.

And in Lake County, home to the long-depressed steel town of Gary, the bipartisan Elections Board has stopped processing a stack of about 5,000 applications delivered just before the October 6 registration deadline after the first 2,100 turned out to be phony.

"All the signatures looked exactly the same," Ruthann Hoagland, a Republican on the board. "Everything on the card filled out looks exactly the same."

The forms included registrations submitted in the names of the dead -- and in one case, the name of a fast-food restaurant, Jimmy Johns. Sally LaSota, a Democrat on the board, called the forms fraudulent and said whoever filed them broke the law.

So hypothetically, if I go around to 20 or so Republican-sponsored voter registration drives and sign up with every one of them, THEY are at fault for committing voter fraud, not me, right?

Does ACORN have any "instant background check" available to them that will tell them whether the person who just filled out a voter registration card has already done so at another location? Does ANY group have such a check in place?

I don't know for sure where the truth lies in this story, but neither does anyone else at the moment. And as 'Rappy pointed out in the whole "Kill him!" fiasco, it could just as easily be Republican "plants" going around and signing up multiple times on the same day or the same weekend, trying to flood the system with bogus registrations in an effort to "break" the system and expose widespread "voter fraud" where no such intention exists on the part of the group sponsoring the registration drive.

It needs to be incumbent on the registrar of voters to weed out duplicates and faulty registrations, and they need time to do it. In short, you really NEED to be registered to vote well ahead of the elections, so that all registrations can be vetted and certified as valid.

No matter which side of the political spectrum you're on, voter fraud needs to be addressed, because a fraudulent election does nobody a damn bit of good. And those who engage in such practices need to be prosecuted.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I would also point out that voter rolls and elections have been hacked in the past, disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of people across the USA.

Canada uses hand-counted paper ballots. They count them overnight, and the results are ready the next AM. If THEY can do it, why can't we???

You know for a fact that elections have been 'hacked' ? There's been some who said it "could" happen, and then others saying there's no way it could, but is there any proof that is actually has ?

Yes, the last two elections. How else could a retarded cowboy become President?

Hypothetically, that's correct. But it's not Republican voter registration drives that are being investigated, apparently by bi-partisan election commissions. If you got cites of such activity by Republicans, please post them. If not, then - hypothetically - you got nothing.

Geezer, I think you missed my point somewhat; probably my fault, as I was being a bit obscure. My actual point was that, if *I* were to go around to 20 different registration centers in quick succession and register at every one of them, then it should be *I* who is guilty of vote fraud, not the people who let me fill out a card.

It SHOULD be caught and tossed out by the system, in a perfect world - and I think the vast majority of them ARE being thrown out. But if *I* am the one trying to defraud the system, then it's not the people who I'm defrauding that are guilty of fraud, it's me.

And you note that it's not Republican voter drives being investigated. So then it's categorically impossible that there could be any Republicans going around to the ACORN drives to falsely register, huh? I'm not saying that's what has happened, but this is the party of Rush Limbaugh, who begged people to riot in the streets in Denver to "Recreate '68", so it's not completely outside of the realm of possibility.

What I'd really like to know is this: What are the minimum identification documents necessary to register to vote? If I can just grab a card and fill out any old name on it, then how can you expect NOT to have widespread voting fraud?

When I show up to vote, I have to be in the right place, my registration card has to match the registrar's list, and I'm asked to show my driver's license so that they can match me to the person listed on the voter rolls. That's handy, because there are no less than THREE people here in town with my exact name - and one of them was born on the same day as me!

MALBADINLATIN

We should all find great joy as the McCain campaign starts disintegrating in mid air. The spectre of a bloodbath in Iraq when we leave has taken a back seat to our survival instincts. Believing the baseless allegations hurled at Obama has taken a back seat to our economic troubles. Being the richest and most powerful nation will have to be earned again, and because the Pubby's don't believe that, under thier leadership we wouldn't get started rebuilding till it's too late

Voter fraud, Ayers, Wright, Resko, whoopie fuck!

The candidate who discloses the most details about thier economic plan will win the next debate. Even if that happens, I think it's too late for Conservapublitarians

Well, on the bright side, they haven't brought up gay marriage or flag burning this time around.

'Course, there's still three weeks and change before the election, so maybe I shouldn't jump the gun on that one...
