My 80-year-old father-in-law was hit by a car while walking to the post office on Xmas eve. Icy roads in Wisconsin.

Broken ribs, bleeding brain. At least he's refusing pain meds. Xmas in ICU.

Yikes!

But these old guys seem tougher than we youngsters.

Walking to school 10 miles in the snow with no shoes seems to have toughened em up.

ouch. at least he's alive. I lost all four grandparents to medical malpractice. They really don't adjust to the way the body changes with age. Most people think it's just that everything is weaker in older people, but one change is that a lot of metabolites increase radically, evolution is actually fighting aging, an older person might have 10 or 20 times the metabolites in some areas, than a younger person. This makes a random drug like a pain killer multiply in effective dose. If you're 20, you might be actually utilizing 3% of some drug, and at 80, 60%, thus turning a normal dose into a lethal dose. Doctors often don't get this. Refusing meds in general is probably a good idea outside of anti-parasite related things.

I wish him the best of luck.

ps. I have a close friend who is just about 90, and while he was not hit by a car, he was knocked over and broke a leg, about 3 days before christmas. He's also trying to refuse treatment, because of the dangers of anaesthesia esp. to older people.

The right to refuse treatment was a topic of an earlier thread. We should probably make a list of rights that's more detailed than the bill of rights. A lot has changed since 1689 [sic]

He was only walking 1 block to the post office.

The biggest danger is the doctors, not the car crash. Since he owns a health food store, he knows that.

Quote:

"The most stunning statistic, however, is that the total number of deaths caused by conventional medicine is an astounding 783,936 per year. Using Leape's 1997 medical and drug error rate would add another 216,000 deaths, for a total of 999,936 deaths annually. It is now evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the US."

So PN's gay, Jewish illegal Alien Pa-in-law (who is also his Grandpa by the way)fell over in a drunken stupor. Who cares?
Perhaps it will knock some sense into the old twat.
Or was he pushed by a Mexican death squad?

He's doing better now. Was shoveling 3 feet of snow today in wisconsin.

Talking to a lawyer made him feel better, apparently.

In related news, my brother-in-law in wisconsin showed up to work, and found a note on the door saying OUT OF BUSINESS. He worked there 17 years. 100 folks laid off without warning.
