Federer's breakdown on the trophy stand was painful. As a competitor you should never show how much the other guy has gotten into your head - do I even have to say, "athletics are as much mental as they are physical?"
It was like saying that from now on Nadal owns him, and if you admit that openly it's the same as quiting.
I know that he struggled with a bad temper when he was a young player. This seems related, like it pissed him off not getting his way.
I'd love to hear what other tennis greats would say (in private) about his response.

And yet, Nadal was a better sportsman after his victory than you are as a mere commenter.

Yup, it was tough to see Roger break down like that. I felt terrible for him. There's just something about Nadal that's in his head.

It was Federer who got me back into tennis after nearly 20 years away from it - both playing AND watching the game. Seeing Federer move, his grace, the fact that he never seems to sweat and never shows any temper, yet is fully capable of showing humor and having fun playing, is what the sport needs.

I like Rafa. I like watching Djokovic play. But it's Federer I love to see win. I don't doubt that he'll be back on top.

Much ado about nothing. Both played a marathon grudge match. Federer was exhausted and beat up, but then rallied after he composed himself. Nadal showed all manner of class too, so where's the fuss ?

Missing something... how am I being unsportsmanlike? I was making an observation about a fundamental aspect of competition at their high level, how if you tip your hand and show someone they have more mental toughness than you you might as well hang it up.
"God, it's killing me." On the trophy stand - and I don't really care that much - but that is unsportsmanlike. At that point swallow your pride and get off the stage, it's not about you.
Agreed, Nadal was most gracious, total class.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Federer was beat by... Federer. I know Nadal hits with a lot of "junk" - pop up on the bounce, REALLY hard to return. But that doesn't explain Federer's 52% first serve stats. He's usually at 80+%. And on serve it's really only you, the ball, the sun, and the wind. The opponent has very little effect.

So I dunno what was bothering Federer. Maybe it was Nadal. ("He's beat me on clay and grass, I hope I don't lose on hard court too...") Maybe it was trying to beat Sampras' record. Maybe he has to find a reason to play when he's NOT number one! Maybe he's just burned out. (I hope not!) He looked fit enough but his body language cried out "I really REALLY don't want to be here". So I hope Federer finds something within himself to make tennis a joy again. He's given so much to the sport, has achieved so much, raised the level so much...

BTW, I find PizmoBeach's comments entirely appropriate. At that level, the game is as much mental as physical.

Missing something Part Duex: It is in fact what I claim I posted, you added "mere." I did not limit the scope of my observations.

This was Nadal's first hardcourt slam, did you know that? His first victory over Federer on "Federer's surface," an immense achievement over the man many claim the greatest in tennis. It may even turn out to be the pinnacle of Nadal's career for all we know, and sadly it had to compete with RF's self interest and lack of professionalism.
