We live in the age of technology. It would cost the New York Times less money to send every one of their subscribers an electronic device to receive their news stories then it does to distribute the paper and ink version. Most people get their news online anyway. Newspapers have been dying off for years, with big ones merging in order to stay afloat, and still losing money. Thousands of layout and graphic designers have been going back to school to apply their skills to electronic media because they can see the end of their jobs coming.
In short, this is nothing new. And really, it's nothing bad, it's just the way our world is moving.

America loves a winner!

BBC America had a neat interview w/ the founder of Amazon.com ,Jeff Bezos, on the release of the Kindle 2, the fancy e-book reader. Wicked cool device, which allows up to 150 books to be stored in it's memory. Asked if he thought the book was dead, he replied No, it's not dead, but it's had a pretty good run, and maybe it's time for it to step aside , or there abouts.

In essence, how we transport information via the printed words has remained the same for 100's of years. It's high time mankind take another step forward, and this is the logical next step.

It is not those who use the term "Islamo-Fascism" who are sullying the name of Islam; it is the Islamo-Fascists. - Dennis Prager

A concern of the GOP is that the people aren't informed enough to understand their policies, while a fear of the Dems is that the people ARE.

Reason I have a problem with this:

1. Data manipulation. Maybe its just me, but I've been seeing movies lately where, when I get them on DVD they've changed. Scenes were cut short or missing, dialogue changed, or plot twists rearranged.

Look at Star Wars and ET from petes sake.

They can do the same with written data. Now that may be fine (for some) when it come to fiction.

But what about History? Remember your 1984, and how THEY were always changing around the history books to justify whatever they were doing. Same thing here.

Ok, if not History... then what about great works of literature? Subtly change it so that it reflects the mood of those in charge. Suddenly, 1984 becomes a happy, hopeful, love story. Maybe not now, but 50 years from now?

Look, I worked in the Medical Records industry. In fact, I was part of the company that spearheaded the whole digitization process.

Do you know how easy it would be to manipulate someones record, to clear the doctors of any incompetence? Or make it so that the insurance wouldn't have to pay?

People keep rushing forward with no thought on how the tech could be misused. Its frustrating, and honestly, a bit scary.

We can split the atom. Now, do we choose to make a bomb out of that technology, or use it to power entire cities?

Can't move forward with out taking some risk.

Ummm... we do both...?

Actually, in this instance, we overwhelmingly choose to build a bomb with it, by a factor of hundreds. Let's face it - we have far more nuclear weapons than we have nuclear power plants.

Golly, the end of yellow journalism? No more fake news for NYT to feed us? Shazzam! Hopefully sources of real news won't also falter so quickly.
Good to have a hardcopy record, so the newspeak goons don't rearrange the facts too much.
