RUE

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

I didn't call you a jerk - I called you lying fool. And, the pity you claim to feel - makes me feel slimed. Gaawwdd - get it OFF of me !

Still don't know what 'nominal' means ? That's three times you've evaded a simple definition. Try google.

Remember, knowing what words mean it the key to reading with understanding !

I have made the case - many times and in many ways - that SOCIETIES have the right, the power and the need to determine how they will comform themselves. And while I think I DO know some things better than most, I have never said that it would be a righteous thing for ME to require everyone follow MY beliefs - or even for ANYone. That is properly for society as a whole. And since we DO live in a democracy - nominal as it may be - I have advocated the power of the vote as the means to effect change. Unlike, I might add, Wulfie, who thinks democracy is go se, because it comes up with things HE disagrees with.

And BTW - ALL societies enforce their exacting requirements on their members, whether it is taking the beating hearts out of sacrifical victims or making people pay taxes. If you have a problem with that, take it up elsewhere.

...Whaaaa?

Okay, I'm going to try to digest this in small portions. Clearly my brain works very differently then yours, because this sounded almost foreign to me.

Conform themselves...? To what? Society as a whole conforming itself? Individuals in the society conforming themselves to that society? I do not comprehend what you are saying. Did I miss something?

Okay, this I do understand what you are saying.

And I disagree strongly.

Society requiring it's members to follow the beliefs of the whole is not the function of society.

I'm also assuming here that by society you mean THIS society, as in the common social structure to be found from Washington to California, from Maine to Florida, plus Alaska and Hawaii.

Here's a question. What beliefs should this society, which EVERYONE should agree with, be founded on?

I would argue that a "nominal" democracy is NOT a democracy. To say we're a democracy in name only, doesn't that suggest that functionally we do not meet the definitions of a democracy, but just CALL ourselves one?

If we are not a democracy, and our apparent AIM is to be one... Shouldn't we then be taking steps in that direction?

But, and I may be mistaken, you seem to be arguing for the current system we have, as a replacement for democracy... Why?

Myself, I think that negotiation and problem solving is preferable to decision by vote, and maybe this is where your argument for our system is coming from. The only problem is, negotiation is done by proxy, by people who I believe to be uninterested in those they are representing. Individual to individual negotiation, without violence, at the local level, is much more appealing to me than a broad scale socially accepted mainstream.

Perhaps there's a problem in how we define society, then. Honestly, there's no way to know if I, raised in a society that makes human sacrifices, would decide to resist the demanded sacrifices. But someone would. And what if this person, making arguments against sacrifice were to point out that hey, maybe if we don't kill our own people, we might be more prosperous? Or, if the sacrifice victims were the next village over, we might make the argument that them killing us and us killing them is a mutual loss for BOTH societies.

Are we really going to compare human sacrifice to TAXES? You're working against yourself. But, let's look at taxes then, separate from that.

Statement: We should pay taxes. Why? Because, it's ASSUMED, the money is put into a system which has benefitted us, and will continue to benefit other people.

Say the money isn't used for that purpose. What then?

Say that there's a better SYSTEM for encouraging cooperation among society than leveraging taxes to obtain money for social programs. What then?

If you have a problem with that, take it up elsewhere.

And if I don't like the War in Iraq, I should move, I suppose. Just so long as I'm not in the way of the accepted mainstream and their policy and agenda.
