I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Not that is is very interesting to anyone but me, but... do you realize that with this forecast 5 days of rain on the west coast, that there will be the lowest amount of US in drought conditions since the US Drought Monitor has been keeping track??

Ahhh, Sig...you must live out here. Ain't it wunnerful? I feel sorry for those it is affecting adversely, but I'm glorying in it too (as you can see by my post, which I was putting up apparently as you were writing this).

Maybe we get out of "drought conditions" now, eh? I've missed these rains soooo much the past few years, I can't control myself from enjoying them. What the hell: my enjoying them isn't going to change someone else from suffering, so dammit, I'm gonna ENJOY!!

Where is you, Sig? I hope not So. Ca.--those guys have really suffered the drought; we have our own lakes that supply us, so we haven't felt it nearly as bad up here in No. Ca. I hope the usual So. Ca. fires don't explode into slides for those guys.

Now, Station Fire root fires will be put out FOR GOOD! (Ya'll who live in wet country... root fires continue to burn underground for months, long after a fire is officially contained.)

I've considered complaining about the rain here in Austin lately, but I know better. It's looking to be a colder and wetter winter than usual here, which is quite welcome. But before the ground can even dry out, we get another storm front rumbling through.

I don't dare complain about it, though, since it'll be hot and dry soon enough... ;)

Where down there? I hope you guys are getting your fair share; we're getting pounded up here and, tho' I feel sorry for those near the fires (which no doubt created slides for some of them), I hope it gets down there in buckets! You need it more than we do by far!

We had a clap of thunder last night that I will never forget. It had to have hit directly over us...the flash woke me up (and it takes a LOT of light to wake me up out in the Outback) and the boom hit like half a second later...it literally rocked my bed, and scared the pup! I've never had one hit that close before; quite an experience! You getting the thunder storms too?

We need them to keep going EAST, dammit. Jim's son is in Jackson Hole; least snow they've had in 50 years, they had rocks sticking out of the snow last year. So I hope it hangs on long enough to get that far....ooooommmm...

Were you in "mandatory" this year or not? I had heard it had gotten that bad, but not up here. I hope this kills it for a goodly number of years to come.

I have a question for anyone who might know -

Many, many years ago (I was a young teen) a lighting bolt woke me out of a dead sleep. I could hear the lightning sizzle, and the light was so bright there was only bright white light and a few deep shadows. It was so close the EMP caused a fluorescent light to glow ! So I braced for the thunderclap which I assumed would be hellacious, and waited ... and waited ... and waited ... it never came. The only thing I could think of was - well, of course you wouldn't hear it if you were in the middle, b/c all the sound waves are traveling out, away from you. But I don't know if that makes sense.

Any thoughts ?

I was awake and seeing the light (so to speak), hearing the sizzle (anyone who's been close to lightning knows what I mean about the sound). After the flash ended the room was dark and I could see a desk lamp glowing quite brightly. But no thunder ...

Wild. I don't think I want to ever experience THAT! This was quite close enough to make an impact...

Only thing I can figure is if the sound is made and travels away from the strike because of, what, air waves or something? it would seem to me that being right where the strike "struck" as it were, there would be no air waves or anything to CREATE the sound. Just guessin'.
