I wonder if left and right mean anything anymore. Or if they ever did. I find that I have many of the values I always did, and largely it's the methods that I've changed my PoV on. My biggest witch from my youth was on Socialism. I used to think it would be a great idea, I think I had a lot of people telling me that. But that's really a method, not an end goal or value. It's dangerous method that centralizes a lot of power and hands it to someone, but it's still a method.

The values which I've changed, not much, mostly are things where I think I've always held a particular value, and I was just surrounded by people who didn't, and so I succumbed to their viewpoint bowing to their superior wisdom.

A lot of change has been many years of people showing me I was wrong. Listening when they do is another part of that. Now, sure, don't expect me to say "oh, no, you're right." I'm denser than that. It can take weeks to months for it to sink in, but it does sink in.

Often those changes go to how a particular position on a particular issue leads to an impact on a particular value, like 2a on the centralization of power, or gay marriage on the strength of the family. Sometimes I waffle on these.

I meant as in, running it, but yes, come to think of it, most of those who run it, also, I'm sure there are exceptions. I get that Bloomberg only ran GOP because that's what was available, but he's not a leftie, just indifferent to Dems vs. Reps, as am I, as I am of him. Feh.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Well, my parents were Republicans, but I paid no attention to politics until my late teens, at which time I followed the family path and actually WORKED for Goldwater (don't hold it against me, I was young and stupid, I admit!).

Then I started thinking for myself and everything changed. I got liberal. I bought into the Camelot thing (tho' I was always more for Bobby than Jack, who seemed a figurehead to me). Still didn't know much, but had leanings. Started when we lived through Ronny Ray-guns in CA and learned who he really was, then I saw him elected as PREZ!!

Pretty much stayed liberal since then. It more fits my values than conservative, tho' there are aspects of both. So I stayed Democrat, unil some time during the Dumbya administration when I got disgusted with the Dms almost as much as the Repubs, and went Independent.

Still liberal tho', and always will be. Whatever the PARTIES and politicians do, my values match the liberal mentality. Maybe except a more reasonable approach to fiscal responsibility (which NEITHER party has anymore!).

I wish we had one aspect of the Brit system for sure: a short election time! Ours starts the day after one Prez or Congress is elected, and goes until the next one. Just think how much less money it would cost to be elected, and how much easier to vote according to your own bleiefs, if you only had to campaign for six weeks or so, instead of four years!

The other thing I admire about their system is the "vote of no confidence". I LOVE that idea!

I think I like the idea of more than two huge parties overshadowing everything, too, but I won't know more how I feel about that until I see what happens in Britain this year...

On the other hand, geeez, a thread dedicated to Crappy?... No comment.

How about we each tell how WE evolved to our current philosophy; that's much more interesting.

I agree, DT, good one. I'll freely admit I'm probably center-left-left, but I'm not rabidly left; what bothers me currently is the right being forced to the right fringe and driving out any potential center or center-right.
