Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said that BP, the energy company responsible for the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, helped craft the bill proposed by Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) that would tax businesses for carbon emissions and raise the cost of fuel for American consumers.

“The problem for Democrats is that debating the Democrat cap-and-trade bill might not fit neatly into the White House messaging plan since it’s been widely reported that a major part, a major part of the Kerry-Lieberman bill was essentially written by BP,” McConnell said on the Senate floor on Wednesday. “Let me say that again. A major part of the Kerry-Lieberman bill was written by BP. This is clearly an inconvenient fact.”

McConnell made his comments at a time when Congress is debating a “compromise” global warming bill introduced in May by Kerry and Lieberman in the wake of the deep-water oil rig explosion in April that killed 11 men and has dumped thousands of crude oil into Gulf Coast waters.

McConnell also charged that Democrats want to “piggy back” the Kerry-Lieberman bill into legislation being considered to mitigate future oil spills.

“At the same time as Americans wonder when this gusher will ever be plugged, we hear word that the administration and my good friend the majority leader [Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.] want to piggy back their controversial new national energy tax--also known as cap and trade--to an oil spill response bill that could and should be an opportunity for true bipartisan cooperation,” McConnell said.

“So here again, we see the administration using a crisis--in this case the disaster in the gulf--as an opportunity to muscle through Congress another deeply unpopular bill that has profound implications for small business and struggling households,” McConnell said.

“Look, if the health care debate taught us anything, anything at all, it’s that Americans want these kinds of massive bills to be debated out in the open,” said McConnell, “not rushed past them on a holiday or tucked into a must-pass bill aimed at alleviating the kind of suffering we’re seeing in the Gulf.”

“An administration that seems to spend most of its time coming up with new ways to show how angry it is at BP, is pushing a proposal that BP actually helped write,” said McConnell. “I can’t understand it and I don’t think the American people will understand why that it makes sense to respond to the BP oil spill by imposing a gas-tax increase on the American people that was advocated by BP.”

When asked by CNSNews.com about McConnell’s remark that a major part of the Kerry-Lieberman bill was essentially written by BP, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said, “I believe that’s true. In fact, it’s kind of funny, the Democrats try to say the Republicans are the product of big oil and all that.”

Right off: "helped draft" and "wdely reported" leave room for doubt, especially coming from a member of the opposition. It's not unusual for things to be stated in these terms in hopes nobody notices them. Not saying it isn't true, but there need to be facts which can be substantiated to make the claim viable. Mostly it's partisan rhetoric. That he then repeated it twice more is a typical manipulation; he stated it as FACT when it was only "reported". Inhoff was careful to say “I believe that’s true”...all wording intended to say it IS true without any proof whatsoever.

If "helped draft" turns out to be true, it would be quite valid to include an oil company in drafting. Doesn't mean they "wrote" it, until and unless that can be proven.

The rest of what you quoted is blatant partisan rhetoric. What you added is even worse, typical PN bullshit, and only to be ignored.. We’ve heard these tactics used by both sides, by all politicians, so it’s not valid anything. I’m all in favor of taxing emissions; the only way to get business to change and put ANYTHING ahead of profits is to hit them in the pocketbook.

I've actually heard similar talk here and there about the cap and trade bill. Lots of it unsubstanciated, 'cept for that Obama has recieved BP campaign money, and that they've paid him more since he was elected to swing cap and trade in their favour. Gonna go digging.

There's definitely a vested interest, and they'll be wanting to influence as much as they can.

No proof yet though... Still looking.

Interestingly, a few months ago, supposedly BP pulled out of the USCAP group that was talking with the government about cap and trade. Cap and trade stalled in congress, and now looks like it might be inserted in an emergency bill to deal with the oil spill.

Yet these statements from BP indicate they still support cap and trade.

From what I understand, cap and trade is going to be like a stock market for pollution allowance. IMO, the end result is that the big companies that are difficult to regulate will buy up all the allowances.

The debate between carbon tax and cap and trade between the oil companies seems to be a question of whether they think they can make more money by raising prices in response to a tax but have no emissions cap, or if they can skew the market in their favour with an emissions cap.

ETA oh and you'll find that last part is actually true. You're slipping. Too many jews, you lost sight of the obvious commie plug in your story.

Bush's, iow, cheneys, energy policy was written by API. While the A is for American, in the American Petroleum Institute, BP is fairly american.

That said, individuals tend to pick sides. I think Bush was more Chevron Texaco, Conoco Phillips and Exxon Mobile, and Valero. Not that it makes any differnce.

My Uncle used to work for the API, and he told me right off who the members of cheneys "secret" energy panel was, laughing at the name secret. It was the API board.
